Need Help, Quiet Mufflers

The early models (1968-70) had very quiet mufflers. They had to be to meet US noise rules. Whether there are any still available in the marketplace is unlikely, but it might be worth looking.

When I fitted new stainless pea shooters to my commando it was notably quieter , they are still straight through maybe have more sound deadening built in??
Which ones were those?

They were from RGM motorcycles in the UK , bought them about two and half years ago had to wait a while because they were out of stock at the time but are very good quality and are standing up well but just a quiet for me

I am thinking of going with a set of Epco mufflers and head pipes when I get to that point. I got a pair of Epco BMW "Sport" mufflers for my R90S a couple years ago, and I'm very happy with them. Good quality and sound. I guess I should check with Epco to see if I can get that healthy "sport" sound in their Norton version. Is anyone on here using Epco's on their Commando and how are they?

Beware dealing with Thomas D Epperson and Epco, as lots of people have had problems receiving product after paying for it. If you do a search on Google, using "Thomas D Epperson Epco," for example, you'll find numerous discussions, some of them relatively recent, in which people have had difficulty receiving product after paying for it.

I was defrauded by Tom Epperson back in the 80's, so he's been operating dishonestly for at least 30 years.

Problems with the business practices of Epco have been previously discussed on Access Norton here:

+1 Rober_Norton...Major BEWARE!!!

If you can actually make an order be sure to make it COD. I was one of his dealers and he never missed a chance to let me down.

Two years ago the mufflers you purchased for your BMW were, probably, made in Nicaragua and retailed out of Miami, or least that's where Epperson had them shipped from; the group that was making them was pretty reliable with good quality; one day I got a call from there marketing manager saying that they were all done...

Original 1974 mufflers were a lot quieter...They had a smaller exit...Cycle Warehouse in Butler PA had an original set that were new takeoffs...Don't know if they still have them but would be worth trying..I actually have one nice muffler but the other rusted near the inlet..

Thanks for the Epco info. My BMW ones did come from Central America. Rethinking exhaust plans.

I have one almost new one , we could make a pair! Was the pair that was on ebay for long while last year from Cycle Warehouse?

The previous owner of my 73 850 installed a set of EPCO stainless mufflers. I have no personal experience with EPCO and their business practice but I do have about 20,000 miles of experience with their mufflers. They are definitely quieter than the stock units. They have held up much better then I anticipated. I want to replace them with a set that has a bit more bark but I haven't been able to justify it to myself yet. I'm a weak spineless push over when it comes to self justification so they must be somewhat OK.
If you want less noise I would recommend them, but again, I only have experience with the product not the manufacturer. Good luck.

Yes they were quieter, and did have smaller exits.
But, as discussed here before, some of them back then (1973 models ?) had removable exits, called 'mutes' in the parts book, removal of which restored them to a more rorty bark. Only one little screw held the mutes in.
It was actually recommended in the Owners Manual that the main jet size was increased by one notch if run without the mutes - and go back down one size if the mutes were refitted.

It was seeing this in action that made me experiment with fitting short bits of stainless tubing in the exits of some non-Norton mufflers, that quietened it down somewhat. Fitting smaller jets would also make it slightly more frugal in the fuel dept ...

Yes that's the set...I thought about buying, but just bought a set from Commando Specialties..Saved a few bucks and close enough for me..Going to Cycle Warehouse next week, might see if they still have them.

Does anyone have an address for RGM in the UK? Also, opinions on the quality of their exhausts would be welcomed. Thanks, BH NC USA
