Hi all,

I have a friend with a 70 Fastback who wants a set of slip on mufflers that are significantly quieter than the stockers.

Ideas?

maybe the type silencers that are fitted to the triumph t140v ,you would have to re make the exhaust mount to take the mini cotton reels if there is enough room? why does he want it quieter ?

Well, if he could find a set of stock fluted mufflers like what's on my 74 they are obscenely quiet. I like them cause they are original but I hate them because they are just plain too quiet.

Mk.2 /Mk.3 black caps or bean cans as they are normally called Stateside, should just go straight on.

Only thing vwith bean cans is you absolutely have to have balanced type downpipes or the bike will be stifled

Don't forget the MK111 exhaust system weighs a lot. Plus it would look terrible on that year bike. :)

Low Atlas style pipes look good on the bikes. And I believe they are quieter than Commando peashooters, but I stand to be corrected. Problem is it seems to depend on who makes the mufflers/silencers.

They would definitely look wrong on that bike?

Yep definitely I agree ,or maybe a set of Manxman silencers but don't tell Anna!!!!!

Hi,

I do not mean to hijack the original post, will delete and post a new topic if that's the case. I'm also looking for new mufflers - but going in the opposite direction as far as sound. I recently heard the pipes that are on the limited production "DomiRacer" and thought I'd died and gone to heaven... Given the stock header tubes (that I'm OK with continuing to use - and not have to fund a replacement for), on my 72 Commando who makes an aggressive, not-quite-race set of pipes that I can use on the street (note: in NH noise is very rarely an issue - my other bikes have aftermarket pipes and I've never run into problems with the law). As for looks, I find the pea-shooter design - although authentic - to be fairly dull.

Thanks!

Well, regardless of the stock or non-stock exhaust pipes, the Mark III black cap mufflers turn a sporty and torquey motorcycle into a staid, doggy and uninspiring garage queen. Sold my black caps and replaced with A/N pea shooters. Never will regret that decision! Night and day difference in performance.

IMHO. and John Faville's I disagree.

You would have to have the whole exhaust to make it right. They do sound pretty good, from the factory, and I think are a little quieter than peas, however they are lower and point straight out so the sound is away from a persons ear.

I experimented with poking short bits of stainless* tubing into the exits of some (totally non-Norton) mufflers.
This noticeably quietened them down, without killing the performance - without testing them 100%.

I'd think this could work quite well on peashooters.
If you find the right diameter of stainless tube, with a bit of wall thickness to it,
and get it a good neat fit, and maybe a few dabs of mig to keep it there,
it would still look near stock...

*it doesn't have to be stainless tubing of course - which will give you a much wider selection to choose from.
But stainless won't rust and so won't look crusty ....

And if you keep the dabs of mig to a minimum, they could always be removed later.

Worked for me, I bought in quantity and had the old lady follow me around handing out earplugs
to all I passed by!
ha ha ha

When I fitted new stainless pea shooters to my commando it was notably quieter , they are still straight through maybe have more sound deadening built in??
