Hey Jordan,

What is the distance from the kick starter to the top iscolastic bolt ?, looks very close.....

Ummmmm.....On the z-plate? I don't think it's as close as the pictures would indicate.

I double-checked tonight. The kickstarter has plenty of room inbetween itself and the top iso bolt.

Didn't get much done tonight..

-Reinstalled switches into polished housings (replaced one of my broken levers with a spare we had); they're dangling until this weekend when the (still needing to be painted) clutch perch and master cylinder will be installed.
-Did some work with the caliper and its mounts (wirebrushed the lower hose and mounting plate because they looked terrible)
-Spent a good amount of time trying to remove pits and grime from the front rim with some Nevr Dull.. Probably only got half of it finished--still lots of polishing to go before I can even THINK about switching over to the Mothers. Still need to use Mothers on the rear wheel (it's already been cleaned of pits and whatnot)

Forgot to mention, we installed the sidestand the last time I was out. It's SMOOTH and much more functional than it was when I brought the bike home (the tab was trashed out and the stand itself had been worn really badly)!

Some more progress will be made tomorrow (mainly paint and cleaning up the headlight bucket/installing the headlight) and then this weekend I'm hoping to have the bike off the sawhorses so we can finish it up.

The speedo/tach cables should be here tomorrow as well. I've got a new Mikuni throttle cable on the way. Hopefully I ordered the right length.

Looks like I may end up running the dorky stock seat for a little while. I still haven't been able to get hold of the local upholsterer and I'm running a bit low on money anyway. :\ Hope it doesn't ruin the look I have going.

On my bike, 6cm clearance between the bolt and the kick starter gives me about 1 to 1.5 cm clearance on the pipes.

Yikes. I guess I'll see what I've got when I install the exhaust (hopefully tomorrow).

Dad's tank and sidecovers finally got shipped off to Vintage Vendor this afternoon for some midnight purple paint. Also, I FINALLY got hold of the upholsterer so there may be hope of having my seat done in time! Yes!

Huzzah!! The bike is off sawhorses!

Mocked up with the black and gold tank/sidecovers and a stock '72 seat:

The clutch perch and instrument cups have gotten a couple of coats of paint and should be ready to install tomorrow.

It's *ALMOST* finished. I'm talking to the upholsterer tomorrow about fitting a "Corbin-like" seat on the bare pan, but that stock '72 seat doesn't look too bad..

I just can't seem to get the hang of it. I'm sure I will.. :/

The trick is to learn how to use the kickstarter to push it past the compression stroke and then it's easy. Well, as long as you don't have a Combat...

I just need more practice I think. Dad insists the 'proper' way is from the side so I haven't really tried from the top while on the seat. I'll give it a try when I have it safely back at my house and I can figure out what works best for me without dad laughing at me. :p

Coming along fine young man. :)

Kickstarting is still proving to be the bane of my existence. I need to order a new throttle assembly, too. Fail.

Even double pluggers are not the best for kick starting a Norton

Save your pennies and get an Alton starter, then you can start it even barefooted

Hey, I'm 67 and start it easily by standing on both pegs to start with and then the right foot on the kick start, just over compression and then WHAM, it's started. If everything is working right, it's a pushover. I never could do that thing from the side.

...killing the centre rather sooner than later.....

Sorry, but I was socialized that kicking a bike on its stands is one of the worst crimes man can commit against machinery. An not even the 11:1 Commando I once tried needed it, it just took a little longer to get if over compression. My 9:1 Atlas needs to be tickled, then two kicks without ignition to wet the inlet walls and then it'll start easily.

The dude is 67, he can start the bike any way he wants. Do you think he's really worried about the centerstand?
