Took this some time ago, so it does not look like this now........there has been another bike squeezed in since then!

I hope it is another jubilee or navigator becouse the other one must have felt alone I had one (of each) and did thrash them ! They never went bang . I wouldn't mind getting another one just to upset those who say they were rubbish but never had one.mind you the Jubilee did not exactly stick to the road......but then that made it even harder to follow as you were never sure where it was going to

No lynxnsu, I have added a Commando to the 2 jubilees and gsxr.

Better late than never I guess. Currently a "Guzzi" castle. Sorry! More like a hovel really.

looks good to me... plenty of space and shelves... all my stuff is laying on the floor in a disorganized mess

Man Castles

My castle is as complete as my motorcycle knowledge, whereas those on this thread look like shrines, examples of purist dedication to be proud of. I'm still proud of this effort to date - it's taken 18 months and a court appearance to argue the local council to a standstill. I received the building permits today. When finished there will be an insulated roof with doors at each end, and personal access doors cut into the rear of each container for internal access to storage for tools, parts, personal and business items, keeping the work area clear. That should last about 2 weeks!! :)

Very creative, depending on the neighborhood, it could be viewed differently, but I like it. With a bit of shrubbery and paint it could even be good enough for an upscale area. In a local TV show, they used a single container as a temporary shop while a house was being built, they cut the whole side of the container and added a roof to double the work area. Are you going to leave the containers as they are or cut the sides out and close both ends of the open area? How much did you spend so far on your castle?

Everytime I get on a plane, I think a section would make a great shop, containers are just the same and much more available.

Jean

The ends will be closed in with matching coloured doors. I'm going to set a door into each container wall looking into the middle at the opposite end to where I took the photo from, rather than remove the whole side. From the road (around 39m/120ft away) it will look like a large shed, the containers won't stand out. It is landscaped on both sides of the photo area, and has been freshly painted. By the time I finish it the cost should be around AU$35,000. What's a "section"?

:D :D that's exactly what I meant, a "section" of the fuselage, many of the big planes are at least 25 feet in diameter and there is a s much room "downstairs" as there is in the passenger part. As mentioned, containers are much easier to find, it's just thier boxy looks that make them unappealing as living quarters or shops.

Jean

Wow,

Those containers seem like a great idea to me. That would also be good in a hurricane area.
I have a 40 foot container in SF that I use to keep decorations for the holiday train in. They seal up well and keep ton of electrics in very good condition. If you compare them to the the caboose I use they are far more water tight.
I like the big beams for the roof too. In bad weather you could just seal your best bikes up in the containers.
When I move to Kiwi I'd love to build something like that if you could get it by the local planners. Oh, yeah, and my wife. The reason I have big glass doors on my shop extension wasn't my idea.

There's definitely some nice castles showing up here. I'm still containing my jealousy. I like the containers and I like what Jean was saying about opening them up on the sides to give a more open interior. I can see why you might want to keep 3 distinct work areas too though, like a paint shop and buffing, sand blasting type areas away from your building areas. Still I'd be awfully tempted to jack up those containers and put a 12' "pony" wall up under them :). There's no such thing as too much space!

The problem that i've seen with removing the side wall is that the roof sags on that side, so then requires propping up at a few spots, so you lose a lot of the ease of access. If you want a bigger open floor it is easier and cheaper to simply get a shed designed and built that way. I almost raised the roof, so as to install a hoist, but the council was having a fit already about the design; it's 3.8m high at the apex when the building codes specify 2.4m for outbuildings. My wife and I own a boarding kennel, and now we're coming into our peak holiday season over here I will not have much time to finish it :(

cheaper to add an I-beam if there is sagging. there are also other structural solutions if you open up the sides, which is a great idea. and don't forget stacking of containers and other permutations.

Sorry sns, but adding an I beam is not cheaper at all. The shed manufacturer who supplied the roof only kit will supply an entire shed kit the same size as my building (9m x 12m x 3m) for just under $11,000. It cost $11000 just for the painted containers including delivery and a crane to postion them, then I would still need to buy the roof kit at $6,000, then cut out and dispose of the walls, then buy and install two I beams sturdy enough at 12m length each to hold up the roof, and posts at each end to hold up the I beams. I looked into it, only did it this way for the vermin proof storage, cos Fast Cheap n Easy this aint. There are many other permutations and stacking options but as has been suggested by myself and others, there are limits to what is acceptable in non-rural or industrial areas

I'd put a door in the sides but I would not want to lose the strength and integrity of the container. My garage had an outside person size door on the left I used frequently to avoid going outside to get from one side to the other...until she blocked it with six or so massage tables that is. I have a good deal on massage tables if anybody needs one, or six to clear out part of my garage...
I'd just buy more bikes anyway.
