And here we are. The build is done, the testing and tuning are finished, the bike is dialed and we're ready to go. ECTA Ohio Mile; Wilmington, here we come! M-PG 750/4 (Modified Production, Pushrod, 750cc/4 stroke)

Question, what size Mikuni carbs are you running and what is the silver cylinder on the fuel line, filter? Be sure to have big enough needle and seat and keep it on the fat side.

Bike popped out of gear under hard acceleration, revved to over 8000 rpm; got it back in gear and back on full throttle, then threw a rod at around 6500 in 3rd, which would be about 90 MPH. Clutch adjustment nut had also jumped ship, so no clutch, either. Kept it upright throughout a looong skid, but oiled the track down pretty good. Best we can figure is a rod bolt pulled the threads of the aluminum rod.

While ECTA officials and other racers where very sympathetic, I honestly felt pretty good that we had made it as far as we did. I had initiated a project, saw it through to completetion, passed technical inspection, and made it to the start line of a major (for me, anyway) competition. We put everything away and stuck around for the rest of the event to watch and learn.

Ouch! Well done to keep it up. And a great attituede to boot. Nice project. Going to rebuild it better/faster/stronger do another run?

That's a real shame. For all the work you guys put in it would have been nice to pick up a record.

Once we got home, Herb suprised me with a backup motor!

Installed an 860, with a highly modified head, STEEL RODS, and stock crank.

Realized the ground we need to cover at the event really added up, especially pushing a bike around all weekend. Noticed a lot of teams had specially built trailers to move their bikes around, so got busy building one once the backup motor was installed. Big thanks to Sam Zanger for the Mig welding and Aluminum checkerplate tray!

In the meantime, the rebuilt bike, now with an 860cc, was invited to the Fuel Cleveland show, put on by our friends Mikey Revolt and Lowbrow Customs. Super fun weekend!

Really though, we couldn't wait to get back racing! With our "new" 860cc, we where now bumped in to the 1000cc class, M-PG 1000/4.

Check in again tomorrow to see how it went the second time around!

You guys are still having great weather in October by the looks of it. It is damn blowy and rainy here in NZ this last couple weeks. Wool slippers and an insulated hoodie...

I believe these photos are from some time ago, maybe a few months?
Just going by the results list at the Wilmington Mile.

On the other hand, weather tomorrow in Wilmington Ohio is sunny and 27 c!

DUH! ECTA sticker says June...
yeah, we are all a little slow. I was wondering how you were able to get the new motor in the bike, hit a show and return to the sunshine all in the same day.

OK you have us all in suspense now. I could go to the ECTA website but I would rather hear it from the rider.
See you in the morning!

The record for M-PG 1000/4 was admittedly soft, at 116 MPH. I Couldn't wait to see what we could do...

First run, shifting at 5000rpm

Second run, shifting at 6500 rpm

3rd run, winds picked up substantially to 10 mph side wind.

Wow, thanks for sharing that. I used to be on a dirt oval race car team. I remember how often stuff went "boom" and how committed we all were to get back on the track asap... Racing is an addiction, but more expensive than drugs ... Congradulations on your record runs. You blew the old records away by quite a margin. That's gotta feel good.

Like all gear heads, I wonder how you blew up your primary engine. You slipped out of gear, so maybe it over-revved and got a valve to piston collision on a high RPM induced valve float??? or do you think something just let go under high RPM stress??

With the June weekend over, we felt pretty happy with our endevour so far. There was still, however, unfinished business in the 750cc category. We immediately got to work. Herb started building a new 750 motor from scratch, to exact dimensions.

I say, that's rather nice.

That crank is almost too good to hide away inside the engine!

Any particular reason you didn't go for the stronger cases and light barrels from Steve Maney?

Are you using a JS cam? If so, which one?

Answers to some questions:

Sonofsiredward -Question, what size Mikuni carbs are you running and what is the silver cylinder on the fuel line, filter? Be sure to have big enough needle and seat and keep it on the fat side.

We have run 38mm and 40mm VMs, and have a set of 44mm on deck... Silver thing is an ECTA/SCTA mandated metal fuel filter body. Jetting is usually between .300 and .320.

o0norton0o - You slipped out of gear, so maybe it over-revved and got a valve to piston collision on a high RPM induced valve float??? or do you think something just let go under high RPM stress??

So much damage, it's hard to tell what exactly happened, but pretty confident a rod cap bolt pulled the threads from the rod and the cap came off at around 6500rpm.

Fast Eddie - Any particular reason you didn't go for the stronger cases and light barrels from Steve Maney?

Are you using a JS cam? If so, which one?

The ECTA class rules stipulate frame and cases must be from the same manufacture, so aftermarket cases are ruled out. Yes, using JS cam and pistons in the 750, the lumpiest one Jim makes. 860 has a megacycle stage 1 cam.

To All; The timeline of this project stretches from January 2015 to present (more posts still to come...), and covers the 2016 ECTA events in April, June and September.

The plan was to run Speedweek at Bonneville with our friends from Lowbrow Customs, but with the uncertainty of the Salt Flats over the last couple years, and with losing a considerable amount of money when Jaime from the QUALITY INN STATELINE refused to refund our $4000.00 CDN (2 rooms, 8 days each, paid in advance as necessitated by Quality Inn Stateline - $185/night USD during speedweek, but who's bitter? It was over a year ago, I should get over it) when the 2015 Speedweek was cancelled, we felt the ECTA events where much more appealing. We still plan to make it to Bonneville, but currently having a lot of fun over here in the east. The Quality Inn Stateline definitely left a very bad taste in our mouths when it comes to Wendover/Bonneville. We are also looking into the 2017 Loring Timing Association events at the Loring AFB in Maine, where they run both a 1 mile and a 1.5 mile course, with a "test course" to fine tune setup.
