I put in all new internal/external parts in my oem '73 (shim-type) front iso. I adjusted it on the bench (method 2 in service manual), set it to .006" with the through bolt (with spacers as described in the manual) torqued to 25 lbs. I then mounted it on the bike. On the bike - also torqued to 25 lbs - I can't get any feeler gauge in at all. However, at idle or up to 5k RPM (as high as I've revved it in the garage) it acts "normal" as far as vibration is concerned - good bit at around 1500, then dropping off as the RPM goes up. So it seems to me there is clearance there but I don't know why I can't measure it. There is no way it can change from on the bench to on the bike as far as I can tell. I tried to lever the engine over to one side on the centerstand and on the sidestand. I realize the instructions are that the bike has to be lifted by the lower frame to take the load off the engine/cradle. But I assumed that with a stout lever (wooden hammer handle) I could move the engine anyway.
Am I wrong about being able to move the engine on the side or centerstand?
I can't see how it could be possible but is there any way the bench adjustment can produce a different clearance when mounted on the bike?
