I thought this was covered before but I can not find it. What is the best way to replace the center stand spring and the kick stand spring. To streach a spring that much any suggestions would be welcomed.

Do it with the stand in the retracted positon it will be easier. If you don't have a dedicated spring hook/tool you can usually get away with a pair of visegrips (what those knuckles).

that's how I did it.... centerstand up, maneuvered the spring in, then pulled the center stand backwards until I could slap the bolts in

The only way I could get was to have the centerstand off the bike. Put the spring in place and then slip one bolt through one side(left) then menuver the stand over and slip the other bolt in.

I use this technique with the side stand also.

No matter how you do it, it's a good feeling when it's done.
I have done the rope thing and the roll of quarters thing. I stay with the above mentioned way.

get a handful of pennies, bend the spring enough to insert a penny. Continue inserting pennies until the spring is long enough to fit then remove pennies one at a time with pliers.

On my 71 I fitted the stand, then fitted the spring to the frame end on the engine plates. I then tied a length of strong rope with a loop in the other end to the spring and with the bike on the side stand put my foot in the loop and by lying down I could strech the spring with my leg and slot it into the hole in the stand. I tried the penny trick, but the spring seems to be too big for me to get it to work - it does work on the sidestand.

Hmm, haven't gotten to the center stand spring yet but I know the trick works on a Triumph Tiger Cub! :)

If you are doing it alone i suggest...

Install one end of the spring into the engine plates.
Attach a thick piece of rope to the other end of the spring.
Attach the other end of the rope to your tire.
Keep the side stand down but the center stand up.

When you push the pike forward it will stretch out the spring. This will allow you to move it into the hole on the center stand very easily. Once its stretched out to the correct length if you cannot get it installed use quarters, washers etc. etc. to keep the length, cut the rope and attach.

Finally had some time to get the center stand spring on. After seeing the great suggestions I tried the rope method. Seeing that the back wheel and fender was not on the bike I hooked one end of the spring to the frame. Attached a rope to the other end of the spring, then using a 1/2 inch thick rod placed in the slots where the axle of the rear wheel would go I wound the rope abound the rod as I turned the rod with a pair a vice gripes. I did have to change the position of where I tied the rope to the spring but had it right on the second try. It was very easy and no straining what so every.

This might be a problem... I found that the spring for the center stand just touches the oil filter when in the up postion. It looks like it needs about 1/16 to 1/8 inch more of clearance. 1975 MK3 and I do not have the engine in yet but don't see how that would relate to this problem. Does anyone know what the clearance between the spring and the oil filter should be? Do I have something assembled wrong? Any help would be great.

CENTER STAND ISSUES. I got a center stand without the bolts and bushings. Is there a source for obtaining these? If not does anyone have the specs on these parts? Does anyone have a photo of the underside center stand, so that I could see how it is attached? Thanks

You should be able to get them from any Andover Norton parts supplier.

Fit the bolts with their heads on the inside of the cradle.

Be aware that the bushings changed for the MkIIIs.

It is the sidestand bushing that is larger OD on the the Mk3 (0.687" over 0.625")
