Ok here we go . The 71 Basket case has threw me a new curve ball :? So the center stand that i have has no inside blocks/gussets to stop it on the cradle up or down
Can someone give me some dimensions ? something like off the center of the bolt hole to the top point and bottom point of the rectangle block ? Maybe a pic so i can weld in two stop plates

Thanks a Lot

No one can help? ok how about has anyone seen one done without the inside flat bar plates ?

I can't help you with your center stand dimensions request.

However, consider an alternative:

PitBull.com sells a rear stand made for Commandos for less than the cost of a new center stand.

I took my center stand off many years ago and went with the rear stand.

Takes less than one minute to raise the rear end for any servicing, and I like the fact that I don't have a heavy stand hanging, and banging up and down with a spring that can break.

just a thought

It's hard to tell what you need if we cannot see what you have and no matter what we can deliver to you, you are the fabricator.

Just off the top of my head I would say to put the center stand in place.

Have some 1/4' flat stock cut into a couple of small piece to place in the position where they will effect a stop.

Look at the diagrams of the 71 stand on Old Britts site and you can see the little rectangular block that serves both up and down stop.

Cut and grind to give a good fit and once you are ready clamp them onto the stand and tack them in place. Test.

Remove the stand and finish up the welding.

Grind to finish, prime and paint.

It should only be a matter of fabricating a couple of rectangular plates and then welding them on in the correct positions, which shouldn't be too difficult to determine with the stand bolted in place.
This is the 850 stand.

Those rear stands are pretty nice and I lust for one. The later centerstand (850) is a big improvement. It uses a heavier spring so it doesn't bounce around at all. I don't think that killer spring will be breaking anytime soon. Price is not bad considering the problems that it solves.

If going a long distance I would want the stand there and be able to patch the tube on the road or have a spare on hand. Near home, cell phone plus trailer is a lot easier. I had a front flat this summer and was able to carefully ride home about 4-5 miles. The Avon 90/90 tire stayed in place but the tube had a big hole in it.

I agree that the center stand is more of a convience than a must have. I use the side stand almost all the time but would be lost without the centerstand with as much fiddle farting that I like and enjoy doing.

Even for long term storage the centerstand is up and the bike is on one of those yellow lifts that i can move about the garage thoughout the winter.

That being said, Even though I have upgraded my side stand with the lug kit, I tend to treat it gingerly just because.
