center stand for older models

As I understand it, up to 1970 the center stand was mounted to the frame. If someone wanted to mount the later stand to a '70, would the cradle need to be changed or can it be drilled to accept the mounts?
 
FWIW, my cradle is off a 69 and it's been drilled to accept the stand with later bushes. But my frame is a 71, so I'm not sure if there would be interference issues with the lower cross tube on the earlier frames
 
Worth investigating, and maybe a job for next time the cradle is out so it can be drilled. The earlier stand is now fit for purpose and will not break unlike originals, not as cheap the later centre stand, but maybe the safest solution until the next time the cradle is out.

I believe it was declared on another thread that a late/cradle centerstand could be mounted on a S1 frame/cradle where the existing rear cross bar did not interfere.
Obvious the cradle had to be also drilled for the later hardware. That job has some obvious complications....
 
I actually like the frame-mounted center stand. It is a bit easier on the isolastics when the bike is on it.
 
I previously owned a 70 that had been imported from USA as a basket case, it had the drilling in the cradle for the later centre stand, I suspect it may have come from the Factory like that.
 
Earlier stands don't have wide enough/good feet so your bike can fall over if not on concrete.
 
The rear isos on 71 and later bikes always become oblong after time.
Earlier frame stands also seem easier to get the bike up.

I had a '69 and a '70. Kick starting while on center stand bends the bottom frame rails up.
