So I take it that the 1 3/8" pipe gives proper Commando power as determined many years ago by Dunstall , first on his Dommie motors, and the 15/8" outer pipe is for appearance only?
Does the 13/8" pipe run full length to the muffler?

Glen

Glen,

Yes, no question the 1 3/8 pipe makes better power than the 1 5/8

The 1 3/8 insert is about 14" long out of the head. After that, we saw a benefit in allowing a larger diameter, so it goes up[ to 1 5/8's all the way through the muffler

Yes, the 1 5/8 had a lot to do with the look of the system. I also had a different head fastening system initially (a screw in spigot like a Triumph) but abandoned that idea after running it for awhile. The pipe has a tendency to discolor less due to the double wall, but that was not the reason I did it that way

The bike is so pretty it hurts my eyes. That's way past my artistic skill level, but I've been around Nortons for long enough to truly appreciate how much work must have gone into this series of bikes. Just gorgeous. Has Jay Leno ordered his yet?

Ken

Ken,

Glad you like it. The bike/design definitely went through a few different phases. It's never as easy as what you think it will be when you set out to do something like this. If someone is building a bike just to look a certain way, that's one approach and you can make some compromises. However, ensuring that the total package works as well as it looks, is a bit more challenging

Leno lost out on this series of bikes.

Stunning Matt, another nice bike, so you going to build me one for our next Argentina to Alaska trip? :D

Gino,

No problem. Its will be a build with some serious storage capacity, a portable shower and 20 gallon fuel tank. Just the way you like them. It will come with a spare engine since you usually cover enough miles on your trips to require a rebuild

And a trailer for the polishing gear!

It is a well put together bike, well made and well engineered but I like the lines on this bike better.

Call me an ass if you like!

I love the look......... Black, gold and shiney is good (me) but i am always envious of the "right" custom look........ Good onya.

Wonderful to view and contemplate. What is the oil capacity?

Hobot,

Just under 3 quarts. Runs a std filter set up off the engine cradle. There is also an oil catch can that Comstock designed. This is what's mounted on the right side of the bike, just over the tranny. This catch can returns into the timing chest that due the engine breather virtually runs a vacuum

If the oil tank breather catch can is returning oil to the timing chest, why not just run the oil tank spine breather straight to the timing chest? - whats the purpose of the catch can?

As owner of above bike, its so it runs and produces negative pressure
I.E. air trying to get in instead of air and oil trying to get out !!!!!!!!! no leaks
So as in my case every other commando iv'e ever owned leaked oil including a new 961
also a brand new interstate I bought in the 70s from the dealers
looking back a bad decision it had a combat engine ......................
still I was young and stupid now 'im old and wiser supposedly, 961 was a bad idea too.............

Can i ask why the 961 was a bad idea ? is it "just" oil leaks?....

Jim,

The catch can is there so that any oil pushed out of the oil tank will have a larger volume area to settle in. The can has a screen in it and a very small drain back hole.

In other words, you can dump a fair amount of oil into this at one time, if the pressure in the tank increases quickly yet have it return to the engine with a controlled, consistent flow

The catch can is also vented. It has a second line on top going up under the tank with a K&N filter at the end so its allowed to breath.

If the line just went straight back to the engine it would not be able to absorb a larger volume of oil nor would that line be vented

I think this is where i went wrong
my engine was built without drainage holes in the timing chest and so an reedvalve was doubtfull(filled up the timingchest).I thus relied on breathers to let the engine breathe and stay dry.Of course this also meant that the oilreturn was somewhat foamy , filling up the oiltank/spine and spitting oil out after a relative short time. a breathertank caught most of it but meant stoping and putting the spilt oil back in the spine.Running the engine 'vacuum' is a good solution.
Thanks for the idea (still like this too shiny bike a lot , now even more ....)

it started badly , wanted a £1500 non refundable deposit,
and insisted I paid up front the balance before delivery ( not good business ! ) which pissed me off
on my inaugural ride chain guard fell off at 80 odd miles an hour ,
then they had the nerve to ask me if I still had it !!!! as carbon fibre ain't cheap ..........................
I said I retraced my steps found it and flung it in a fu..king hedge.
various problems occurred ,even bought a set of loud pipes. £500.00 , trips out to the factory ,quite a few ,luckily not far,to be fair the service manager mark
was very good , now left ? but as they say silk purse etc....
final straw was as I sat at traffic lights on the way to the factory finally got tired of engine noise lot louder than exhaust
so sold it and got my money back.
VR880 and Kenny and a tale of woe which still hurts for another day !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 perhaps

  wow, Richard it seems you got the preverbial "Lemon" and on top, the peepoor backup from the dealers as well..
