I recently got my commando. But had some questions, I beleive its a MK2a, it was made in late 73, but listed as a 74 850. The frame is grey, but the tank I believe was repainted in the maroon/red color. The previous owner thinks the original color may have been white, due to some chiping of the paint around gas cap. Does frame color dictate what color the tank color is? Is there anyway to tell from the bikes ID number?

All the frames were black, the factory records do not say what colout the bike was when it left the factory or even whether it was a Roadster or an Interstate. If there are traces of white as the oldest layer on the tank then all that says is that the tank left the factory with white paint, the tank may not be the original one.

It must have been manufactured very late in 1973 to be a IIA model, and it should have a serial number higher than 307311.

That would be unusual, as frames were normally black?

I've never seen or heard of any grey framed models so it's impossible to say?

Probably not.

Thanks for the info guys. Then I guess it will be getting a strip down soon then.

Mine is a 12/73 850 mk2a
It says on the frame plate month and year of manufacture, although it will be registered as 1974.

mine also says 12-73 if I remember (which is why i figure it was registered as a 74). Ill have to give it a look next time I am in the garage

Vulin,

Not sure by '73-'74 however '71 model year factory records showed color and model.
Example: 151679 was assembled Oct 7, 1971, a red roadster and shipped to Berliner Oct 28, 1971.

Typically production for model year numbers was from October of the previous year to September of current model year.

Check with the NOC England through the factory records project. They have the original hand written records.
