You don't seem to realise how high and mighty you're coming on here?

I get the impression that it would be pointless to ask if you've ever made a mistake on the road.

Read my first post - we all make mistakes. Because I don't come out with sympathetic platitudes but suggest something constructive I'm 'high and mighty'? I see lots of people who look old enough to have 38 years driving experience driving carelessly - and worse. They're still doing it because they've been lucky so far. Baz mentions he's driven into the back of a van, calls the guy who braked an idiot and then mentions it's the first time in 38 years as if this is relevant - I suggest he takes some training and he implies its end of conversation.

I conclude he is of the opinion he dosen't require further training because he's been on the road 38 years and he's never ridden into the back of a van before - and you're calling me high and mighty.

RJB, it's driving without due care and attention, 3 points, in my opinion.

Simon, to be fair to Baz, the person he called stupid, was the person who braked hard on a main trunk road (the A303) simply because they wanted to take a photo of the scenery...

Whilst not being illegal... I find it hard not to justify calling it stupid!

Disagree Eddie, he called the guy who used his brakes an idiot. Only got the van drivers word that he slowed down/stopped to take a photo. The reason why the leading vehicle stopped/slowed down is irrelevant, the outcome would have been the same if the alleged photographer had slowed down to avoid an animal, pedestrian, other vehicle..... or Druid.

It's obvious Baz thinks he was unlucky to have an accident. Quote by Nicholas Marshall aka 'Baz' from the NOC forum: "...apparently along that stretch of road there are regular crashes due to people gawping at Stonehenge....". I guess he means people slow down and then the following vehicle collides into the vehicle in front because of insufficient braking distance . The biggest idiots on the road are the ones who think they know everything and therefore further training does not apply to them. I'm of the opinion you never stop learning.

A large part of safe driving, regardless of vehicle type, is to expect the unexpected. If you consider every driver on the road to be an idiot, you'll probably return home safely.

You're not confusing this with a different thread are you Simon? It's the picture taker, not the van driver, whom Baz calls stupid in his OP: "a van that had to slam his brakes on because the idiot in front of him braked hard to take a picture of stonehenge!"

Please lock this up. Sorry for Baz mishap, but cant stand the self rightous baskets preying on somebodies else's mistake..

bad day yesterday

There is one other factor involved while riding behind someone. While in traffic, most of us try to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of us but it seems when someone passes you they, will pull right in front of you leaving no room for error. I always look for an out but sometimes there is none. Most of the time the biker is in the right and you know the saying "Dead Right". People aren't the only hazards while riding. I was almost killed, hitting a deer doing 50 mph. So keep an eye out. It seems like everything is out to get you.

No I'm not confused, could have worded my previous post better though. My main point is Baz would have crashed into the van no matter what the reason for the vehicle in front of the van slowing down. The photo story sounds like bullshit. I'm really surprised only a few seem to be advocating further training - everybody else seems pretty hostile to improving riding standards and putting Baz's crash down to bad luck as opposed to bad riding. Good luck folks!

Is it just because the bike involved is a Norton Commando? I guess no one would careless if the rider was on a Honda.or Harley....A lad crashed his modern trials type bike into a car outside my gate..he was racing a mate in a car, looking back and jeering his mate...bang! He was in a bad way,i didnt respond on here..but had it been a Commando...you would have heard!...how is the bike by the way Baz?

I had a similar situation happen to me a few weeks ago. I was in my cage (Dodge Durango) traveling on a local four lane restricted access road. I was in the right lane going the speed limit, 60 mph. I came up on a slower vehicle, but there was a car to my left that kept me from pulling out to pass. As soon as the car on my left was ahead of me I swung into the left lane. As soon as I did the car ahead of me lit up her brake lights. No way I could stop in time. I put my Durango into a slide and narrowly missed the car ahead of me. Once I got straightened out I found the reason for the cars in the left lane were braking was because some idiot had chosen to cross over the median in an emergency vehicles only crossover. Had I tagged the car in front of me I would have been ticketed. I was too close to the vehicle in front of me. Had I waited for a few seconds more to pull into the left lane I would have had room to brake and avoid the car in front of me instead of the slide job I did. SUVs usually rollover before going sideways. Luckily I still have (I'll be seventy in two months) pretty quick reflexes and got straightened out in time.

So no Commandos where harmed making the film. that god for that..sorry Jim.

Next time you make a smart ass reply make sure you proofread it. It loses some of its sting when there are spelling errors.

BTW, I've probably ridden more motorcycles more miles than you can even count.

Jimmy-C I salute your old man drift driver reflexes in something not made for it in public and glad ya learned similar lesion as me, never get in that much a hurry to have worry if something unforeseen cuts the time/distance too dam close. My first shockeroo in '99 on my 1st motorcycle in 30 yrs, my pre-Peel Combat occurred after dark on open hwy about 3 car lengths back at about 60, car straddled armadillo which jumped up to get knocked out and I hit it with both tires getting airborne on what we call Arkansas speed bumps. I've also gotten too close to a truck I was about to pass after we both entered hwy and speeding up, it threw out fist size rock caught between its dual tires at about 55 mph. Also I practice panic braking when seeing a car waiting to pull onto hwy as I've had em wait till i was in striking distance to pull out or pull out with plenty of time ** with enough power and lack of traction they mostly just spun tires to end up across my lane and half way into the other going no where fast. Last time was a Jeep which reminded me of Less a late president of Norton club fracturing leg 7 places and sent home to have clog in brain kill him a week later. If ya follow too close the vehicle ahead blocks view of your future. In cresting roads I never try to pass until I am sure I can see the whole dam road ahead as 1st glance may not reveal a car in a dip ...

Alright, this really begs the question.
With the new Peel obviously being a "balls to the wall or nothing at" type of motorcycle, I find your statements contradictory to the reality of your true intent. It also seems obvious that you and Peel have a suiside pack and you are just waiting for the courage and/or the occasion the finish it.
Although your statements are all well and good, your are only fool yourself. We see, and your history dictates, a whole other reality.

Your Friend,
Peter

I have barely survived some of my many crashes air craft to Peel or corner school Ninja so have to agree I may be building my own death trap so one reason I'm taking my time savoring the process yet collecting engine at Salt Flat this month. Once I found out I could not crash Ms Peel exceeding anything a fat tire modern could I realized I had a chance to change the world of motorcycle construction concepts and handling extremes so decided to have a go at it this decade. I did not try to learn to ride harshly I was THRUST into it by the P!! and surprise attacks by THE Gravel, Deer, Trucks, Tractors, ATV's, horses, people and tree falls or missing bridge sections washed out unseen in water flow. This does not cover the real off road events that make road racing so dull its not even on my mind much as Peel has so conquered it its incomprehensible to anyone but me so far. I can't take offense at nay sayers as I couldn't believe it myself after spanking track instructor sent out to prove me wrong yet made me consider all other cycles but Peel as poor unstable dangerous corner cripples. I know if I continue to ride no matter how careful I'm going to crash again so armored up Peel to take it and have neck protection so maybe I will too. I hope to pull off a barrel roll extending Phase Four on Peel in case that's a clue how freaking secure predicable Peel was. If I'm crazy I don't want a cure just more hard G's hits missing the ground. My tool of choice is the isolastic Commando for goodness sakes so until then its like a crab escaping a bucket to speak up here. I'm constantly pointing out the tri-link advantage you'all missing on so sorry if its over your head to think its all about me, sheeze.

WOW all this from just a few lines!, apparently i refuse to take further training! dont remember saying that ? and i'm lying about the car in front of the van braking to take a photo!! and i think of myself as "unlucky" hell no i know how lucky i have been !! 38 years riding experience is not relevant to my accident well i think it is ,its better than 38 minutes experience and i should have known better ! i am told not to post about my accident on here as it is not relevant well i agree with that it could have been any bike (unless it was on my old fj1200ABS then the accident wouldnt have happened) but because it was my Commando i posted it on here!, i dont really care what people think about me or my riding skills etc i'm just gutted about my bike and for making a stupid mistake this has been a bit of a wake up call for me!!! i dont want need or crave anyones sympathy i'm just a bloke who rides a bike and it happens to be a Norton Commando but thanks to everyone ,and thanks to the forum member that offered me his spare lucas rita pickup cheers baz
