had a great 3 days at the Norton festival in brixham devon but coming back past stonehenge on the a303 i crashed into the back of a van that had to slam his brakes on because the idiot in front of him braked hard to take a picture of stonehenge!, now i know this is my fault because i hit him but he apologised to me for having to brake so hard ! he also helped me stand my bike up and drag it to the side of the road as the mudguard had locked the front wheel up, the bike went down on the right hand side ripping off the points cover and knocking the lucas rita pickup out of bonk also damaged a brand new stainless pea shooter smashed my fairing broken indicator mudguard etc but i got away with cuts and bruises so i was very lucky it could have been a lot worse cheers baz

Could happen to any of us ONCE, from following too close after that its your own fault. Sometime after crashes the bike develops electrical gremlins and so can the the pilot's spinal nervous system. Check fork tubes not tweaked by rolling them against each other. Check spokes and rim of course. That nice open road past stonehenge would tend to put us off guard for sudden stoppies.

Good luck you weren't badly hurt and the bike can be fixed.

I don't want to sound too tough on you but not having a safe following distance for a car is bad but on a bike you know it can cost you your life.
I've never understood why trying to get to a destination at best three seconds faster by following close is worth the risk.

Following well back also allows me to relax and enjoy the scenery.

All sympathy from me baz,, treat yourself to nice replacement parts, live, learn and keep riding on down the road. We all make riding mistakes or push just a bit harder then we maybe should sometimes, don't beat yourself up over it.. Hope the bikes not bent etc.. Glenn.

We all make mistakes but, as you say, it's your own fault. Who's the bigger idiot - the driver braking to take a photo or you for not leaving sufficient braking distance. Every time I'm out on the road I see all kinds of vehicles leaving insufficient braking distance to the vehicle in front - wet or dry. I guess you've posted this tale as your looking for sympathy - you'd be better off booking onto your local police run Bikesafe course. http://www.bikesafe.co.uk/ Good job you weren't driving the van and the bike in front had to brake hard.

When i re-married and first sat in with the wife driving ,she would drive up the chuffer of the car in front. I didnt want to cause a row...but after a few hard brakes i finaly cracked and yelled out load...."for F##k's sake. back off,and stay backed off" ! She was so shocked at this she as never tail gated since :!: When we go out and in a rare moment i get up close behind a car she bollocks me! Revenge is sweet! If you aint got 5 seconds gap, then you are on borrowed time, more so if on a old bike. At the end of the day, whats to be gained from tail-gateingt?

Treat it as an opportunity to upgrade your bike Baz, don't just replace like for like, but take the excuse to improve it somehow whilst you're at it. Doing that seems to make the work worthwhile in my book.

That's all from me, I'll, refrain from joining in with the road safety lectures !!

Such wise words stating the bloody obvious from these folks Baz  , just hope that in a moment of dreaming etc it never happens to them , it did to me and i'm usually very good at staying my distance ,( most of the time  ) .

Glad you got away fairly lightly as i did , hope you both mend quickly :) .

If you run into the back of the vehicle in front ,you can only be forgiven if whatever distracted you was tall and blonde, otherwise you are a brainless twat!

Let's get something straight here I know its my own fault I have already stated that! Anyone would think I rode like this all the time! Its the first time in 38 years of riding this has happened ! And I do not seek sympathy I consider myself lucky to have walked away from doing something so stupid cheers baz

Dont worry Baz, and dont take the bucking "critisim" to heart... Most of the owners around here that would share a "mistake" are few and far between.. Too scared, IMO to show a fault and receive negative responses from the public.

Good onya for sharing your experience.. :D :D :D (wish i could go through life with no mistakes)

Ok back to Norton's just in case anyone is interested I have the engine running again just need to strobe it up and repair the rest of the bike then I'll be back on the road I just hope the next accident I have is someone else's fault !! Regards baz.

I've got no idea how you ride Baz, but "first time in 38 years" is irrelevant. How many times do you think the habitual tailgating riders and drivers have crashed into the back of the vehicle in front? They'll do it once and then hopefully never tailgate again - except the idiots. The real bad news is the one time they do collide with the vehicle in front could result in serious injury to an innocent party. Book yourself on the Bikesafe course - you may be able to avoid that "next accident" - regardless of who is at fault.

Useful safety tip - try avoiding that "moment of dreaming" by not falIing asleep whilst on the road, even if it's only for a moment.

Glad you're ok & bike isn't too bad Baz.
