Interesting to hear about what modifications are required to allow a slide type carb to work well over a wide range of altitudes without re-jetting?
I have found that the more precisely a carb has been made, the more sensitive it is to very minor changes in the set up, which obviously means that tuning perfectly to suit a particular application is very easy.
Carbon. Ludwig as a Lamba in the Zorst that weakens the mix off as the bike leaves the runway, well 10,000 feet up the mix is going to be very rich. Unless its super lean to start with

If I can win the lottery,,,,,,, can I come too? That's something I'd love to do. Graeme

Wow, I didn't realise what I was in for when I started reading this thread. One question. Has anyone actually bought these new carbs and care to share their first impressions etc ?

My thought when I started the post " Hey this might be useful information for someone." Not " Hey let's start a thread so people can complain endlessly about how crappy amals are or are not."
It's amazing how much some people like to beat dead horses

I appreciate the effort, I like Amals. I fully understand that there are options to Concentrics and some folks prefer those, I don't.

Here, I will try to feed the dead horse.

I love Amals. I love their history, their web site, great service imho. I love the fact that if I get a serious relic I will be able to get what ever I need for it. They keep old shit alive. I love Amal.

I just do not happen to use them on my bike at this time.

I emailed amal 2 days ago, they said they have stock, I bought them onlne, they ended up costing 116 quid each and 50 quid for shippind, total about $420, I then emailed them for approximate shipping time, no reply.
their website states around 4 weeks for them to jet the carbs for customer requirements, so I expect 2 to 3 months before I see them

Did you specify for a Commando? I wonder if the flanges will be suitably modified.

bwolfie I didn't know this thread was already here otherwise I wouldn't have started mine on the same topic!

The story is: I want to fit new premier carbs to my 850MK3, the old ones are worn out. At the Stafford (UK) classic bike show last October I spoke to the AMAL rep who didn't know when they would be available, due to machining issues. So before I call AMAL has anyone bought premier carbs to suit a MK3? (I haven't read all replies to this thread by the way, its nine pages long now!)

Thanks in advance for some great replies :D

Amal just contacted me and advised that my Premier carbs for 750 are being assembled today and will be shipped today or tomorrow, I only ordered them a day a go,

Just to let you all know, I called AMAL today and ordered two MK1 Concentric Premier carbs. Sussed out why I couldn't find them on the website, its because Norton and AMAL didn't use the MK3 Commando as a separate part number, so they used the 932 31/32 (left and right) coding as a standard fitment. So they are the ones I will receive in the post when they build them in about 2-3 weeks :D phew!

I'll be updating my thread on the MK3 rebuild when I get them

Phil from Amal saw on this forum that I had not received my carbs, he followed it up, I checked at the Post office and it seems they been sitting here for the last month, anyway on quick inspection they are certainly are a BIG improvement
in quality then the former ones, I reckon I'll be quite happy with these, be some time before I get to roadtest them.
good service from Amal thats for sure.

Bringing this thread back to life.

I just got my set of premiers from Jerry yesterday.

Got them installed this afternoon.

After a quick tickling, bike started mid stroke on the first kick from cold.

Huge improvement. Best I had been able to get was second kick.

After adjusting idles i went for a few laps around the block.

Happy Happy Happy.........

I had a single mikuni on the first version of my 850. It worked, but always seemed a bit off.

These amals are just right. Work better than advertised.

I've started the bike a few times, hot and cold. less than the first kick and it's running.

I'm certain 2 carbs are the way to go. Plus they look just right.

i also recently put a set of 932 premiers on my 750, they seem to run great. the only "complaint" i would have is the color of them. They kinda have a blueish hue that doesn't exactly look original. But thats obviously a nit picky thing.

Brant, you have re-inspired me to remount the Premiers I have and give them due diligence. What i am really looking for is the pull from 80mph on.
Doing 70 or so with the 40mm pumper, I can easily blip past someone on the highway without dropping down from 4th gear. However, when approaching 90 the air wall takes its toll. If i really need to see a ton, third gear will take me there and beyond before hitting the 7000 rev limiter.

It is so easy to be spoiled with the single MIK, particularly this one, and I have a lazy streak. I hope to see a signicant difference.
