I just recived this email from Amal, I wonder what the price will be. The old ones are $140usd direct from Amal. I have been looking at parts to rebuild mine and I'm close to that figure just in parts. Banjo's, stay up float, viton needle, gaskets, brass bowl plugs etc... I think i'll bite on a pair of these.

Greetings from The AMAL Carburetter Company,

We hope this email finds you well and you find the following of interest...

Introducing the AMAL Mk1 Premier Concentric Carburetter

We are pleased to announce the introduction of the new AMAL Mk1 Premier Concentric Carburetter.

The 900 Series AMAL Mk1 carburetter for four stroke applications has been re-designed to improve performance and wear.

The new carburetter incorporates changes in materials which reduce the rate of slide and body wear and a precision engineered idle circuit which improves the pick performance from idle and reduces fuel consumption. The precision manufactured forged alloy hard anodised throttle slide has a low friction surface for smoother operation and greater wear resistance. The material of the carburetter body has a “passivated” finish which resists corrosion. The ethanol resistant, puncture proof Stayup float and Viton tipped alloy needle valve improve control of the fuel flow.

A new easily removable pilot jet provides precise metering of the idle circuit. The jet, which is located in the opposite position to the Pilot Air Screw, is manufactured to tight tolerances allowing it to be replaced with minimum disruption to the adjustment of the carburetter. Initially the size of the jet replicates the 622/107 pilot bush. Other sizes will be available shortly. Removal of the jet allows access to the rest of the idle circuit for servicing.

The new jet cannot be fitted to earlier versions of the Mk1 Concentric.

The new carburetter is available in 28mm, 30mm and 32mm bore sizes and with right or left hand pilot adjustment.

The carburetters can be ordered by adding “Prem” to an existing specification number. E.g. 930/300Prem.

We will be launching the Premier Carburetters at the 18th Carole Nash Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show at the Stafford County Show Ground on the 15th - 16th of October...

Correct Materials . Pretty good . it only took them 45 years to get round to it . It wasnt like this during the war , you know .

:p

Go Buy It man.
This is what should have been 40 odd years ago.
It will put an end to wear and bad rap on the Amal mark 1
Cheers.
Let Us know how they run.

I wonder whether the carb body is also made from "forged" alloy, and then hard anodised? Primary reason Amal carbs wear out so quickly is due to the fact that cheap pot metal with high lead content is used to make slides and carb bodies. Other makes of carbs being used back in the 1920s were made using pot metal, but Amal are the only modern day manufacturer still using a material which is wholly unfit for purpose.

Being as "they" will be made in China/India or where ever...Sorry didnt even give poor old Blighty a mention.......quaility will be like the cheapo stanchions available......crap!
Better off the devil you know

well I have the goodies, except for the new bodies and idle circuit. Don't forget Burlen have not had AMAL that long, but they do seem to be passionate about the brand and are making some proactive decission that will allow our old bangers to run more original for longer. I comend them.

Cheers Stockie

They state the body material is different, and the idle circuit has been redesigned. It will be 2 weeks until the show that they release them. If pricing is not too bad I will order up a set.

So how do you order one to original 850 commando specs, ie slide cutaway, needle, needle jet, pilot jet, main jet.

While the entry price sounds good, if you have to pay extra to get all these other things correct it could really add up.

Does sound extremely tempting. I've started to get a rather eratic idle on my 850 and would definately be interested in these.

Give these guys credit, they've only owned the company a little while...

Sounds great.

Unless you are chasing serious performance gains then I don't understand why anyone wouldn't use these new Amals. I know the MK1s do wear but clearly Amal can use decent materials, you only have to look at a MK2, great carb, so good that Mikuni copied it.

Also in most cases any Amals on a Commando could be over 30 years old so I think some wear in the body is to be expected, I guess 30 year old Mikunis would be worn as well. Despite their age (and I have replaced the slides) my 850 will tick over reliably at 650rpm (ok between 600 and 850) and if I can just bolt on some new ones without fiddling with K and Ns, different manifolds etc then that will be great.

I e-mailed them this morning for pricing and will let everyone know when I hear back. From what it looks like on their site it's not much different than the old ones. I think they are phasing the old ones out.

There was an earlier pre-announcment and I don't think the cost was going up much.

8 years...long enough.

Really? You work there and know what they went through?

With a purchase of any company the first thing you have to figure out is what you got yourself into. In the US you can do some heavy investigation so much so that you'll know what the janitor had for breakfast and how often his bowel movements are. In EU, nothing. So first you have to sort through business process, records, inventory, customer records, manufacturing contracts… shall I go on?

Then you move to a stabilization phase of keeping the newly bought company running and making as many operation improvements as you can. All the while hoping for some positive returns.

And only then, assuming you have sufficient operating capital can you even consider beginning product re-development.

So Burlen, who produces antique carburetors to sell to cheap old men with crusty old cars and bikes, are going to have the resources and manpower to magically whip up some fancy new stuff "right away"?

8 years is astounding. It's not like this is the first improved part they have came out with in 8 years. The anodize slides, chrome slides, new floats… They have been doing an outstanding job.

Same old zinc alloy. but with a quick dip to put on a hard "Micro" film. that will last an extra 200 miles!

I will go out on a limb and say the cost will be the an increase close to the difference of stock floats and slides.

God forbid I should mirror the thought of carbonfibre, but the body better be a higher quality metal. We could always replace the slides, but it's the bodies wearing out that is the big issue. Supposedly, this material was changed some time ago.
Was anyone independently compared the difference in these materials?

Just read about the "New" amals, Dont tell me after all these years "someone " as just deceided to give the old Zinc alloy a quick dip .A layer of Oxide/Nitride only a few Nanometers thick will extend the bore life? well yes it will,, but for how long.? Passivated surface is Mico thick, and two minutes with Auto glim.Solvo Autosol will rub it off, I would think Original Amal thought about this Donkeys ago, if its that good i will get my pistons. cam. valve stems infact ever part that wears coated with this super finnish.....alas its just a anti-corrosion finish...infact amal only claim that.
