I’ve had an ongoing issue with my left hand carb float sticking and the right hand carb being slow to tickle. I’ve stripped and rebuilt them a couple of times, they’ve got a bit of wear, the sticky float won’t go away and it always seems to stick at awkward moments so I’ve bitten the bullet and ordered a set of Premiers. I’m hoping for good things. Updates to follow.

You've made a wise decision. I replaced my Amals last year and was rewarded with easy starts and better performance.

Good luck. My left tickler has always been sticky whilst the right is a gusher. I can't imagine having different carbs on my bike unless the weather is cold. They don't like cold.
I'd like to hear how your transition goes though.

Ordered them this evening from RGM so they should be here on Friday, I’m away at the weekend so will be next week before I get the spanners out.

Dave, one tip. When you get them remove the pilot jets and adjusters and make sure there is no swarf in the circuits.

Cheers,

cliffa.

Oh, and a lot of folks are now using 19 pilot jets as opposed to what were normally supplied (17's). Your carbs may come with them though.

If you want to you can also remove the unused tickler castings on the inside of each carb, which will enable you to get a straight run onto the inner retaining nuts with a socket.

Hi Dellis, what year and model is your bike and what size main jets are you getting? I’ve been told that 200 is standard for an 850 but I’ve read in other posts on this forum that most use a 260?

Cliffa, thanks for the tips.

Pete, mine is a ‘74 mk2a with a ham can filter and open pea shooters and I’m on a 260 main.

I second that, I fitted them straight away but had to take them off again. One still had swarf in.

Have the 932/36 carbs always come with a 19 pilot jet?

If not, does anyone know when that changed?

That is SO annoying is t it? A ‘precision’ instrument like that, with swarf in it!

That doesn’t happen when you buy Keihin’s !

Serious or sarcasm? (Having no experience with Keihins)

But my premiers had no swarf...

I’ll give a ‘swart’ update when i’ve had them apart.

The other check that is worthwhile is the float height. I finally checked mine after I fitted new Amals and noticed that one carb tickled easily and the other didn't. Now of course I have to be a bit less generous with the flooding to ensure the first kick starting. There are threads on the forum discussing float heights and one links to a US site that has some good pictures but I cannot remember which one. I scribed a line 1mm down from the front edge of the float chamber and set the heights to that.

Thanks Dave and Olympus, the only reason I ask is because I have ordered a pair of premiers from Classic Bike Spares in Aus, and was told that the standard main jet is a 200. When I took the original carbs off the bike, they also had 200 mains installed (I’ve only had the bike for a short while) so I’m wondering if the fuel here is different. I’m using 95 Ron fuel ( no ethanol) the bike is a stock standard Mark3 with a ham can and points but I intend to change to a Pazon Altair soon. I live at sea level in Brisbane.
Cheers,
Pete.

No sarcasm. Just an admirer of Japanese quality control!

But to be fair, the one set of Premiers I have bought were swarf free.
