You're asking if the grabrail looks wierd with the solo seat and in my opinion it does and looks better with the double seat. Also am concerned with your primary filling up with engine oil. This tells me the seal is old and gone and you may have to pull most of the primary just to fit a new one. They don't last forever.

Thanks, I also think it looks better with the stock seat and mine is brand new so there is not an issue there, but the Corbin just fits by butt better.

I am also concerned about the seal and do have a new one onhand just in case. It had not been run for over 10 years so am hoping that it was just a bit dry. Yea I know, probably not. I am going to keep a close eye on it and if it continues to fill up the primary chain case it will get replaced. I think my main error was not draining the sump before starting it the first time and it may have blown the seal. Time will tell. The chain case was not actually FULL but it was full enough that oil did drain out of the drain hole while on the side stand.

Next stupid question. :D

On my 74 there was always a little oil leak around the tach cable where it went into the engine case. Well guess what? This 73 has the same little leak.

Has anyone been able to fix this or is it just a Norton thing?

I don't see any gasket or anything other than the O -ring that goes under the housing. Or is this the culprit? If so how hard is it to change?

I like the grab rail both as fixture to tie some cargo too and sort of like a tatoo on gals small back as classy was of saying I'm easy and an nice ride. Tach seal mods can be seached up form just stacking oil pump nipples on shaft or have drive machined for couple of Honda seals.

" Not that it really matters to me but what is the correct way ? "

for plodders , the speedo should be to the center - of the road .

For people that really ride , the tacho over there is observable
whilst weaveing through the obstuctions to progress .

I had Phil at Fair Spares, San Jose, machine my tach drive for an o-ring. Seems to work. I think others do it too and it's not hard to do if you have the equipment.

The snow finally melted enough that I could get out of the neighborhood and I got in a 20 mile test ride today. I forgot how smooth and fun these things are to ride. I might actually keep it a while.

It started second kick after sitting for about a month and I am sure that is due to the Mikuni carb. I am hesitant to put the electronic ignition on the bike as it runs so good just the way it is.

It ran flawlessly but seemed to be getting very small underneath me. I wonder if this is because I just rode my Stelvio a few minutes before.

I noticed a small oil seep at the gear shift shaft and of course the tack cable but other than that oil leak free. :o Rags have been added to the tool kit.

As we get to know each other the trips will get longer and the trust will build.

I drilled and tapped the big sump nut. fit a good bolt with copper washer and a little automative sislicon and Bob's yer uncle.

I am going to try an experiment on the tach drive oil seep. I found some Viton Xring washers and am thinking of putting one under the tach cable housing where it goes into the tach drive. Hopefully this will seal things up and only raise the housing very little.

I also ordered up the Yamaha vent valve to reduce internal pressure in the crank.

Once upon a time, like when I had my last Norton, There was a writeup on how the Yamaha valve should be installed. Anyone know where that might be?

If it works you can all come by and get one of the rings. as I could only buy in packs of 10. :x

OK Stupid question # 932. :D

Where the heck is the crankcase vent on a 73 850 commando? I just assumed it was the line coming off the back of the right side case but follow that one up and it is going the the filler neck on the oil tank.

There is another line coming off the top of the oil tank the goes down to the air filter housing.

I got the Yamaha reed valve and want to install it to reduce crankcase pressures and am bafooled on which line to put it on.

Put it inline on the hose that comes off of #38.

Update on tachometer cable oil leak.

I don't know if it was the crank case vent or the Viton X ring but NO more tach cable oil leak.

As I had to buy the X rings in bulk, if anyone local wants a hand full of them just drop on by. :D

I got a good ride in today and have again fallen in lust with the Commando.
