Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

Forgot to take a picture of the oil tank. :| Tomorrow, I swear.

72 Combat Proddy Build

Everything Loctited and snugged up. That's one rock solid swingarm.
72 Combat Proddy Build

Filled with oil and sealed up. It should be good for a long time.

I wasn't expecting SS lines but boy, do they look good. Lightly snugged until I get them into final position.

So look how I have these routed. Now compare them to how Old Britts says to do it.

72 Combat Proddy Build

I think they are just showing how to put the washers but I'm pretty sure the way they are angled it wouldn't work.

72 Combat Proddy Build

Should this hang down this far? Does it matter?

Chrome 1/4-28x1/2 and 3/4. Spending at about $2 ea but should look nice.

The trimmed top seam. Looks like plenty of weld left. Took off about 1/4in.

1 1/4 schedule 40 PVC is just the right size to drive the oil seal in. Luckily I had a future model to assist me.

btw, in case you ever do something stupid when working on a bike, just remember you cannot do something as stupid as I did. Luckily no ramifications.

One.

Two.

And a wheel. Just mocking things up but it helps the motivation.

72 Combat Proddy Build

Getting there...

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

72 Combat Proddy Build

Stuck a patch of Velcro on the battery box, then affixed the other patch to it. Then it was just a matter of installing the tank and pressing.

72 Combat Proddy Build

Tank is very secure. The Velcro and rubber mounts allow a little movement but not too much. So it can shake but hopefully not break.

72 Combat Proddy Build

There is a little gap underneath. I'm tempted to leave it or maybe put a rubber pad under there. Dunno.

Anyways it looks good.

72 Combat Proddy Build

Well, once the side covers are painted and all...

72 Combat Proddy Build

One last picture for today.

Once I get the horn in place I'll be able to install the rear fender. Still waiting to see how the rear wheel goes together. I guess I'm missing the front wheel spacer. I need some long gaiters for the front and get the headlight ears on. Oh, and the instrument holders. So a few more things before the front end gets buttoned up. Wiring will really have to wait until more things are on. I have some Progressive shocks on my Pursang. They are too stiff for a little 125 so I thought about using them for the Norton. But the eyelets were too wide. Dang.

72 Combat Proddy Build

Really dig these headlight ears. Might have to wait for another project. Maybe.

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

As someone mentioned in a previous thread use air conditioning caps to seal off the extra plumbing on the oil tank.

I also picked up some 1/2in ID vinyl hose. I don't know if it will melt or collapse but that will be half the fun, right?

This will let me see just what will come out of the breather. I used some solid hose to plumb it up to the airbox. I'll replace this with clear too so I can see how much oil is getting trapped upstream of the reed valve.

Looks like I got the lines mixed up. This should go to the airbox.

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

I think I know why you have that big lower loop in your braided line to the rockers. It should be routed inside the engine plates and comes up between the carb manifolds and over the rear rocker cover. Usually there are some clear hose sections on the line you can slide around to keep from rubbing the paint... uh powdercoat. That SS braid will abrade the powdercoat right off. I think this will get rid of your bottom loop entirely. If you just have it like that for mock-up now then please ignore this.

Here's how Old Britts recommends it. There is already clear hose over the SS, it's pretty apparent in the photos. Note it's outside the cradle. Not sure if there is enough length to loop it through the cradle.

I agree with batrider, the lower banjo needs to be turned inwards so the pipe can be routed between the carbs as the original pipe would have been, and the upper banjo fitted angled inwards and rotated higher, with the crossover pipe positioned forward of the headsteady. Personally I route the braided line outside the cradle and not through it, even though the braid does have plastic sheathing at that point, but that's just my personal preference.

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

Dave that tube that points downward at the back of the oil tank is the scavenge return, not an extra connection!

The other one that takes off at a bit of an angle IS an extra connection (to the deleted "chain oiler").

I'm just following what Old Britrs says to do. Lines aren't clamped down so there is plenty of time for adjustment.

Yup. Will fix it soon.

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

I think the reason Fred routes it this way is that it is easier to get to the intake valves without it going between the carbs.

I tried it another way and I like it better. The Old Britts line is nearly all encased in the clear tubing so no worries about rubbing.

It doesn't touch anywhere. And it's a little more protected than it was before.

I don't think there is enough length to make it between the carbs.

Dave, MS21042 nuts are great in shear app's like cradles. You can skip the washers. There are plenty of other places on a Commando where they work. They look nice, they're locking, and well, they look nice. There must be plenty of places up there that have them, what with the aerospace industry. Portland's a suburb of Seattle isn't it? :D

Good to know.

Portland a suburb of Seattle? That's like saying Eureka is a suburb of SF...

Re: 72 Combat Proddy Build- It begins...

If you'd been following all of my 500 threads you know that the gearbox is sealed up for now, and the carb mockup was successful, for now.

Next up is a package from Paul and finding out what he sent me.

72 Combat Proddy Build

Air Box Rubbers. It's going to be a while before these actually get used.

72 Combat Proddy Build

Dummy axle. Probably on the wrong side but just to check the axle.

72 Combat Proddy Build

And one last pic of the bike. Still not much happening. PIR event is this weekend, so we'll see how much I get done then.

Front wheel sorted (more or less). Now back to the rear.
