Only the pre-Commandos and those after 74 had numbers stamped into them, from what I understand. The vast majority of Commandos have riveted number tags.

I've been intrigued by the "is the frame stamped or isn't it debate ? "; mine is a '77 and all that is marked on the plate is '77' in the year box and the frame No. 850 335774,(with one of the globe stamp things before and after the 850 and after the number), in the ID box, there is no frame No. stamped on the headstock itself, unless it's under the plate itself. I know it's not been powder coated, and by the wear of the paint at certain parts of the frame I'm pretty sure that it is the original paint so it doesn't look like it's been covered over, maybe some were stamped and others weren't depending on what builder did the building of the bike.

To KSUWildcatFan good luck today , I'm sure there will be no probs!!!

00113 -- mine

dad's interstate -- 00119

My VIN is 305XXX.

Thanks for posting those numbers, not that I can offer any explanation why the "00xxx" numbers are there, other than possibly both those frames have been replaced? Maybe our other members could check to see if they have any similar headstock numbers?

i bought a frame couple of years ago #850#f1299xx# and 06-5632 on the tank mount, acording the atlanticgreen link you posted it puts this frame number in the feb 75 league, the 06-5632 number puts in the 75 mk3 e start league but there is no provision on the frame for the hinged mk3 seat?there is no vin plate on it but if there was would the frame number stamped on the frame match the vin plate or would the engine number be on the vin plate

The number stamped on the frame plate normally matched the engine (and gearbox- stamped on the top lug) numbers, so going by the atlanticgreen information, the original plate/engine/gearbox number I would have expected to have been somewhere between 328xxx - 329xxx?
I can't offer any explanation as to why a 06-5362 "MkIII" frame would have have no plate for the MkIII hinged seat? Did it have the plate on the opposite side for the MkIII seat lock, or was that also missing?

Indeed a bit odd as even some late Mk11s had the 850 type gussets so I can't imagine that they specially made earlier type frames as spare parts. A Mk111 frame would have the extra holes for the starter relay on the plate at the rear of the frame spine.

Mk111 Hi-Riders didn't have hinged seats, did they ? Could the factory have stamped up an earlier type old stock frame and despatched it with a Hi-Rider ?

As it's stamped '77', and has serial number '335774' then it was probably one of those (1400 or so?) machines assembled from the stocks of left-over parts to help pay off NVT's debts-under the control of the company's administrator, after NVT went bust during mid-late 1975, so it doesn't surprise me that it's not a 'typical' production example machine?

my dad insists the interstate frame is original. Clearly we just don't know on the commando I bought. One thing is for sure though and that's that the vin tag looks way too nice to be THE original tag. Dad noted, however, that it looks like it's been on there for a long time..

I just hope everything flies with the inspection and I can start riding. I really don't care in the least if the frame is original, I just need to be able to tag and title this thing.

My dad may be looking in the wrong spot on the bike.. I haven't looked around for myself as it is at his house currently.

My first 73 has had the vin plate removed and put back on, turn signals taken off and I have never had a problem with the DMV or police. The new bike I bought is titled a 74, but the numbers show it to be a 73? I couldn't tell you if the bikes have the original frame and it hasn't ever mattered. Almost 40 years of messing around with an old bike leaves a lot of questions unless you are the original owner. I doubt most DMV workers are bright enough or even care to figure out what is or has gone on with your bike. Just don't offer them information. At least that's what I've found to be the case over the years. I know states are different, but if you didn''t suspect there is or could be a problem and there is a problem you'd of taken the bike in already and would happily be riding it, no?

We often find these strange anomalies, so I woldn't lose any sleep over it, and I hope it passes inspection OK.

If there is a frame number, then it's probably here on the right hand side next to the plate:

Keep your mouth shut and answer direct questions.

When they ask you for the money, hand it over.

Go ride.

the best advice yet. I intend to do just that. Hopefully it will be fine.

I just took mine in to Kansas Highway Patrol to get it titled, I had a hard time convincing them to use the VIN tag and not the frame number. Still waiting on the results of the 50 state VIN check for stolen bikes.

All I have to say is my featherbed is titled as a 72 now in spite of all the documentation that says it is a 64. I forget what they are for numbers, 20? across the top of the frame number which indicates where the bike was built. The CHP inspector added that to the frame number below and it became a 72. Fine, it rides just the same.

"20" Is the code for an Atlas model.

A "P" meant it was manufactured at the AMC (later Norton-Villiers) factory at Plumstead Road, London, SE 18.

I don't think mine has anything stamped in the frame next to where the vin tag is riveted on.

Ugggggggh.

Well my inspector called the county courthouse and they straightened her out. It's always interesting when I take a bike in to them, years ago I got an old BMW from my father-in-law who had it on a non-highway title so I had to get it inspected. The VIN number wasn't where the inspector thought it should be. I politely told him I hadn't put it there, it was the Germans' fault.

Good advice if you are:

At the Department of Motor Vehicles
With your wife
Being robbed by a man with a gun

hi lab,no it has,nt got the plate for the seat lock either, mabe someone removed them for some reason, however im not bothered about that as i bought it as a replacement for the unusable mk11 frame my bike came with,my main query was with what numbers should be on the vin plate,ie the stamped frame nmbr or the engine nmbr

Well, it's Tuesday. Is this guy in the Big House, or is he, like so many miscreants, free, thumbing his nose at the legal system.

I say, if he beats the system, the bike should be taken from him..........and put up for auction...........in California.......Northern California..............near my home.
