You might be right about the later ones being stamped. Mines a 74 850 and is, I assumed they all were.

Does the number stamped into the frame match the VIN?

It's stamped into the frame, too? Where?

If you have an early frame you could at least verify the month/year of build. If it matches the rest of the bike (e.g. month/year on VIN plate, correct parts for corresponding year) then you should be fine. Trouble is getting to it requires the removal of the LH 'Z' plate:

:(

My bike for instance was built in July 1971, hence 771. It's assumed 'R' is for Renolds. The frame make.

I'd be more worried that the horn, headlights, running lights, brake light, and turn signals, if equipped, all work. Those will prevent your bike from being tagged. The inspector won't be looking at anything else once he looks at the tag and the old title.

That all works. It runs, it just needs some TLC to run well.

I'll do some more checking when I'm at my dad's house next. I didn't see any point in bringing it to my house since we'll be doing all the work on it at his house anyway.

:)... I, unlike the others, feel you are in serious trouble here. You will lose your bike, and may face a long term in State Prison.

But, we're here to help. I have personally taken up a collection from the members and will bring you $4K to cover your loss. I will also take away the bike and destroy it to keep you from going to the Big House. You are young and have your whole life ahead of you. I am old, so don't worry about me. I will survive.....somehow.

Oh, I'll need your address. Don't put it on the forum, send me a PM.

You truly are a saint. No sacrifice too large.

What a guy, huh? Just trying to help, right?

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the ID tag. If you want it to look more authentic you can buy the original style rivets (I believe they're called Posidrive screws). They didn't start stamping the frames until 1975, with the Mk3 (AFAIK - neither of my bikes have numbers stamped). If you were worried about it you could just buy a set of stamps and stamp the frame yourself! I'm sure it won't be a problem though.

The bigger problem is finding all the undisclosed issues and PO damage, and making it all right. But that's what this forum is here for! We're here to help. :D

BTW, are you in Manhattan? A friend of mine used to live there. Nice little town. (to everyone else: we're talking about Manhattan, KS  )

congrats,
Debby

Up to you young man. You can spend the next 7 years making license plates in a prison factory, or let an old man sacrafice himself so you will have a future.

I ask nothing but the satisfaction of knowing I have saved another youth from taking the wrong path.

And, the rest of you guys..........BUTT OUT. I saw him first.

"Posidriv" is a type of crosshead screw similar to Phillips, commonly used on British motorcycles instead of Phillips.

850 frames were certainly stamped, (usually with an F1.. number) from 1973 onwards until mid '75 when it's more common to find the frame number matches the plate number.

fwiw: my '74 was inspected in various cartons in my basement by an indiana state trooper for all of 90 seconds before he signed off on it as a complete bike. motor, trans, id tag matching no prob. common sense prevails around here. how old are you?

remember if nothing else you could sell it to paul for $350

oh wait that tag, he'll give you $250

Ok, so I guess I got the name wrong. I see OldBritts just calls them "ID Plate Rivets".

My first 850 was a 1973 Roadster that my dad bought new in 1973 and I don't recall it having numbers stamped in the headstock, but my memory could be faulty on that as well. :? My current 850's frame doesn't have any numbers stamped, but it's a replacement frame. The guy I got it from said it was an NOS factory replacement frame. I couldn't find any numbers stamped anywhere on it, not even a part number.

Your dad is a nervous nellie. Relax! If the VIN comes up as stolen when you go to register it, now you are in the soup. but no one gives a rats ass about method of attachment except for AMCA judging.

Don't listen to them. Listen to your dad. Father know best. I can be in MO in 36 hours with my trailer and a check for 4K from the Bank of Nigeria.

Do you really want to end up some 350 lb. gang member's bitch?

You can trust me.

really

Here's what my 1972 has had since new. They are not really rivets but hammer in screws with a plain round head. Sorry for the dirty plate!

You make a good point. My address is as follows:

935 Pennsylvania Ave, NW
Washington, DC 20535

Please let me know when you're on your way to pick up the bike!

For what it's worth I replaced the plate on my bike as well. With new, nicely printed plates available and mine with all of the info except the number worn off, I bought one of the plates offered by one of the usual Norton suppliers, stamped my numbers in it and replaced the old one with it. The original plates can get pretty ugly and are easily replaced. I wouldn't worry.
