I am trying to set up my clutch without the engine turning.I can select 1st,2nd 3rd and Neutral, but i cant select 4th.

Any sggestions.

Are you turning the mainshaft whilst changing gear, there are very few static positions where you can get all 4 gears.

You need to rotate the rear wheel in order to select gears easily. When 2 teeth come head to head they wont move, but if they are moving past each other they will easily slide together.

Has the trans been apart?
No but its been in a garage for about a year.
I will put the casing back on and tighten the clutch screw then lock nut it.
Incidentally how much pressure do I put on the clutch spring and do I put it in gear to lock it,it seems to go on forever when I tighten the screw.is this correct

Rob

read the manual.

Not sure what you have done so far, so if you tell us what you have done we may be able to help you. If you have the primary cover off, and have a clutch puller, then it would be a good idea to remove the clutch plates and clean them. It could have seized up in there. If you don't have the tools. Still read the manual [ or get one ].

The screw on the clutch needs to press against the pin from the clutch cable and then undo one turn then use the lock nut to secure it.hopefully this will give enough movement for the clutch.I will take the bike for a run and see how we go.

Is the clutch a wet one or dry one if wet where do I put the oil.
Rob

If all your primary drive is standard its wet clutch. Put oil in case through any of the inspection plugs (use the clutch adjuster as you have removed it to access clutch). On out cover is level plug on bottom edge of outer face. AFT is recommended by most for pre mark 3 bikes and 20/50 for mark 3 because of its automatic chain tensioner.

Hold your breath L.A.B. an get ready for we all know who an what.

That would be your diaphragm spring turning.... and not the nut tightening. Stick a (large) flat screwdriver in one of the slots to counter hold it it.

Shifting the gearbox and setting up the clutch are unrelated issues.
I for one, am puzzled on which issue you are trying to address?

You really need to get a manual and read it every time you sit on the toilet.
There's really good shit in there.

I've tried hard to keep shtum, but I can't hold it anymore...

I just don't understand how / why someone with no experience of a particular machine (any machine) thinks they can just tear into it without having first at leat glanced at the relevant chapter of the manual and kept it close at hand as a reference during the intervention.

Maybe its the modern day 'me-now' instantant gratification YouTube culture or something... But I just don't get it !

Keep yer hair on Eddie.

Its like when you get a new tv set or stereo,. You set it up and the when you cant work it, you read the manual. We all do it don't we.

anyway. Get a F'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''g manual. or read it.

Too late for that... it left the scene some time ago...!

Anyway, just for clarities sake, I am ALL FOR questions... After the manual has been consulted.

That great information thanks Rob

If you are dry shifting the gearbox try this. Put the bike up on the centerstand. Use a zip tie to hold the clutch lever against the handle bar. Now you can spin the back tire with one hand and work the gear lever with the other without having to turn the engine over.
