Indeed.

Sadly, two of those five have already fallen and I think a third won’t be long...
Fallen as in sold ? I don't know what Norton is thinking but if they don't get a move on there'll be nobody left to sell to. Maybe they are struggling with parts just like us ? Can't be true , they had all of the overseas suppliers just waiting for their orders !

Yes, fallen as in fallen from the 961 fold. It’s sad cos I think it’s a failure on Norton’s part really, not retaining such numbers from what must be pretty much their core target customer group.

Why on earth Norton are still closed now is a complete mystery. The one thing that I think I can say with certainty is that it is NOT because of covid...

Now you could be onto something there Nigel - mysteriously there is is still no Norton signage up like they want to keep the operation quiet; foreign company buys British company as a front for nefarious activities in sleepy Solihull.....

Well, I’m not insinuating any nefarious activities per se Clive. But I’m beginning to wonder if all is going as smoothly as we’d been led to believe.

As I’ve said before, I don’t think automotive OEMs have been closed for covid since the first lock down... a year ago. And as far as I know, spare part operations never closed for covid.

Norton were supposed to have the final 40 Commandos done and delivered by now and be producing V4s again... yet actually the spare parts counter ain‘t even open nor the signs put up!

Call me a paranoid conspiracy theorist if you will... but...

Happy as ever to oblige. Nigel you're a conspiracy theorist.

Maybe they are trying to iron out manufacturing and design issues they are now discovering? Crazy idea to a Norton owner but.....

Latest is I heard is spares still closed but preparing to open, no date as yet. I ‘think’ that is positive?

In the 961 spares stocks?!

However, I did hear that they are addressing design issues with the aftermarket silencers... they’re cutting 3 feet off of the end of the long cans due to the danger posed to following traffic...

Ref my comments in the inlet mods thread - I think I might be getting a bit of Lockdown Fever as the idea of a slightly truncated silencer is slowing entering my airspace. I blame too much time reading Classic Racer.

Clive, if you’re getting the track development bug as bad as I think you are, it might be worth pursuing more adventurous options.

There‘s another Nigel who runs his own exhaust business called NRP who the classic Norton race boys use. He requires info like bore, stroke, valve timing figures, etc and creates 2:1 or 2:2 systems that give gains in mid range and top end, and are light, and are in stainless, and are quiet enough for U.K. tracks.

There‘s some chat about it here:

I wonder if NRP could, or would produce a 2-into-1 like this for the 961?
Now, that would be real bitchin'.
They would probably need a loaner 961 for fabrication work.
If it could be had for less than say, a king's ransom, I might be interested too.
Doesn't seem Ollie will have his 2-into-1 anytime soon.

You've got that right , they will need the bike for fab work. Norton 961 anything is going to be a rarity ! I would have been happy with the 961 Street 2 into 1 , and that needed Domi foot frames. Right now , I have my sights set on the Thiel shorties matched to my current head pipes and the late model Norton X-pipe I bought. Ollie hasn't had these in stock for many months now.

Yes Tony, that’s my ole black beast, that‘s in its final iteration with the Theil short cans and ‘ape hanger’ Sport bars (which I have to confess transformed it in reality).

Pipes looked great FE and that’s definitely the way I’ll have to go with my clip-ons in the future. And on reflection, quite like the plain tail unit (pinstripe removed). Really surprised you sold it!

Still need to cut your grass though!
