I have a set of seamed muted pea shooters on a 1974 850 are they original? The seams/welds are around the exit cone attachment area. Is there a supply for correct replacements? If correct, I want the mutes as the bike will be as original as possible.

Curious, How can you tell?

FYI, the Mk 1 850 had removable mutes.
The Mk 2 had welded/molded, non removeable mutes that blended with the muffler.

I'm not an authority, I'm gonna make a guess they probably are original.
I'm not familiar with and don't why anyone would make an aftermarket with the mutes.
Are there any markings on the back side?

I was around in those days as I had a new 73/Mk 1 and checked out the 74/Mk 2's when they came out.
My memory serves, there were 4 tell tale signs between them, visually.

Mk 2 had
1. Black barrels
2. Square pleated seat
3. Black chain guard kick
4. Welded/molded mutes

Of course the 30mm head, but you couldn't see that.

One more thing, all the 850's, Mk 1's and 2's, had Seamed mufflers..

That's all news to me
I never saw a new commando in a showroom with welds left as laid
I only saw them with welds ground off

But heres a wrinkle, I have one muted pea shooter without cone to cone welds(no seams) but a welded mute (no markings on either)

Some people are fussy, they look like they are in good condition so I be saving my money and use them and spend the money on something else, when riding who will know the difference unless its going to be just a show pony/concourse condition, I brought my Norton brand new but its been so long since I had the stock mufflers on, about 45 years ago they were replaced, I think mine were welded but then I could be wrong, old age is creeping in lol.

He clearly stated his goal is factory original. However one does wonder how many exceptions were made on the line or at the dealership.

The 850 Mk2 muted peashooters were part 06-4609, the previous open ended peashooters are 06-1978.

The last 200 ish Morris Ital HL's did not have the brochure pictured VDO time clocks fitted. The Ital was on run out and VDO just decided to stop making the clock unannounced. So I found a clock in the local Auto parts shop, phoned the supplier and had 200 clocks delivered plus had a ring made to allow it to be fitted to the hole for the VDO.

The strangest undocumented changes get into production, no one now but me has any knowledge of the VDO clock change, pretty sure Norton will be the same. Its a numbers out the door game.

It's easy to tell the mufflers that had an optional mute, there are holes in the cone to fasten them with screws. My 75 had peashooters installed from new at the dealer, and they had the welded in mutes, which I believe were from a 74 MKII. Very quiet, but OK. I still have them, though not in too good of condition.

how bad are they?

I had a set redone years ago. Took them to a shop that dipped car bodies, etc. They were stripped clean of any carbon inside, the the plater plugged the inlet and outlets. Came out fine. I have to look at mine, it's been a while, but they're fixable. I remember having a hard time getting them off the pipes and did some damage, but they aren't rusty.

My mk2 850 HiRider came to me with mutes and welded seams, around 8k miles on the clock...unknow if original clock or silencers.

Spent a lot of time in first few months of running the bike chasing a curious twittering sound. Turned out to be from one silencer, internals were coming apart enough to give high pitched vibration.
Switched out with standard open end peashooters...twitter gone and glorious exhaust note was heard for the first time. Had been planning to drill out the mutes prior to discovering the failing internals...as per recs here that mutes are a horrible thing.
