How do I route the oil lines on a 1974 850 Commando

Hello again. Another stupid question. Does anyone know a website I can go to to get the corrrect way to route the oil lines on a 1974 850 Commando. I should have marked them upon disassembly but I did not. I have replaced all liones with gas proof hose and new clamps. I believe I have it correct but I need to know exactly where the in and out lines from the oil filter housing go and where the hoses clamp to the oil tank, and two lines on the engine and breather etc. I have 3 manuals and none are very clear on the subject. I am close to firing the bike up and cannot afford any mistakes----Thanks for any help. Mark C.

Something that's good to be aware of, is that some of the earlier parts books (I think just for the 750) incorrectly show the oil filter connected to the feed line. :shock:

They corrected that little boo-boo on the 850 parts book, which correctly shows the oil filter on the return line. The OldBritts illustration is correct.

That can be confusing if you don't know about it...

I have an early style commando with the oil tank without a side cover. I am routing lines now and could send some pics.

The old Britts picture sure is pretty...but the color coding has got to be incorrect. Logic fails me. On one part, the oil under pressure from the pump is blue (rocker feed) and on the other half, it is red(return line). I got my lines correct...but someone needs to be checked for being color blind or explain why this is the way it really should be... :wink:

You may want to consider an oil-resistant hose for this application rather than fuel hose.

I believe the "logic" on the color code oil is: feed cool oil =blue, return hot oil = red.

Knew some one of you would be smarter than me on this....now that makes sense. I thought on a whole different angle, on pressure rather than temperature.
