Swing Arm Mounting Question

Swing Arm Mounting Question
Ok now it makes sense with these photos
I have seen this conversion before and I'm told it's very good
Do you have the swing arm that goes with it?

Something resembling stock that goes up and down might be a better path.

No I don’t.

So this is either a blessing or a curse. If it’s a good upgrade, then I need to find the swing arm that goes with this mod. If not I need a new cradle. I don’t think this shaft is coming out. It seems to be in there pretty good. I’m going to try some more, but if this is a good upgrade, I may be on the hunt for the modified swing arm.

Does anyone have any pictures or any information at all on this mod?

I searched Norvil and RMG swing arm upgrade and didn’t find anything.

I just found something called a Timken bearing conversion. This is the swing arm that look a lot like the one I’d need.

Does this look right? Any one heard of this conversion?

Swing Arm Mounting Question

Would you consider these needle bearings? If not, what would be the term?

Swing Arm Mounting Question
They are taper roller bearings
The conversion I have seen has the pivot end of the swing arm cut off and replaced with larger journals
I'd be looking at getting a standard cradle if I were in your shoes

Yeah...you’re probably right...

As Baz posted, those are tapered roller bearings. Needle bearings are a different bearing type with very small diameter rollers.

Does anyone want a cradle with tapered roller bearings?

I’m back on the hunt for a standard cradle...

if you find something on eBay post it here before bidding. we'll keep you from getting modified parts.

Is there a parts list for the bastard child MK2/MK2A with the Welch plugs and felts? My spindle and bushings are neither pre-MK2 or MK3. That page for 68-74 does not represent what's on my 74.

I have the supplement parts list for Mk2-2A. Not sure it helps but see here.

As LAB said. That’s why I said it may not be helpful. There are no diagrams in the supplement. Think I bought this when I owned a 1974 JPN which is an 850 MkIIa.

There is a nice looking MK3 cradle and swing arm on eBay at $250.
That gives you the strongest swing arm and the sturdiest swing arm to cradle connection plus a sealed pivot.
Others here have utilized a MK3 cradle and swing arm on an earlier bike, so it is possible, but it would require some modification.
I suspect that all you need to do with the cradle is slot out the top transmission hole to allow for primary chain adjust ( auto adjust on MK3)
Using a drum brake wheel with the Mk3 swing arm might require some head scratching and a bit of fabrication.
