Nc, quit lamenting on the parts prices. If you locate a good quality part, pay the fair price and move on...no point to the hindsight realm of could's should'a would'a.

As I got deeper into my restoration I ended up changing the password on my Excel spreadsheet so you know who would have a tougher time dropping in to see what I was up to and where it was going....and I was being patient and executing good research before part purchase....
Nature of the beast.
 
Eventually the pain turns to numbness, then obsession. Then a miracle, your bike starts and runs. Everything leading to that day is forgotten. Enjoy the journey and then the bike.

My Norton has been in a constant state of restoration from the day I rode it from the dealer's lot. Every 10 years or so I throw some more money at it. This last year I threw about $6000 at it and went from this -

Hard to see where the $$$ went, isn't it? No motor work was involved.

It doesn't end even when you have something that works well.

As a 35 year owner I deleted my spreadsheet a few years ago. Every cent was worth it, but it is better not to know.

Spent 4 years doing my Garden Gate ES2 and untold $$ - didn’t keep track because it would have been frightening. I am now saving my receipts for the Commando to establish a revaluation for the insurer when it is done .I am already way past what a real good one sells for and I still need exhaust system , some chrome plating work and paint for tank and side panels and no accounting of my labor .
This is a hobby - not an investment although I seem to apply my renegade strategy to both . Buy high- Sell low .

Correct, once I have bought a part I stop looking at listings for that part and move on. I paid the best price at the time, so what if its lower later, its on the bike sooner.

You aren't paying so to speak... More like a gratuity so you get great service next time you climb on it... Look at it that way and it's much less painful, also puts things more in perspective when you attempt to relate the hole in the checkbook to the little woman.... Terms she can understand you know. Not just buying stuff for an old bike.
 
If you want to save money buy a bike that's complete for restoration
If you really want to save money buy a bike that has been restored, the only issue with a restored bike is who restored it!!

From years past. Now with the CnW oil tank mod ($$$) and a new gearbox main seal, and belt drive e-start ($$$$), the old girl is totally leak free. How long that lasts is anybody's guess.

I have bragged for years that I achieved leakless-ness on my Norton but when we got back into town a couple of weeks ago, there was a puddle of engine oil under the engine and a puddle of transmission oil under the tranny. Before we left the bike last March, it had been sitting for 2 weeks since the last ride and floor was totally dry. Gone for 6 months, bike on center stand sitting in garage (as it has done many times before)... oil leaks for the first time since '08. :(

Bummer. She's punishing you for leaving her alone for so long.

Mine dribbled a bit here and there but the last straw was another broken oil tank mount and the cap leaked with the tank flapping about. Oil everywhere. Bought a nice used tank off eBay and did the CnW oil tank mod. About $300 all told but the frame and floor are DRY. Gearbox mainshaft seal and spacer need replacing every 10 years or so.
 
Some of these posts remind me of a girlfriend from long ago.... I used to call foreplay with her CPR (but not out loud).
