Weighing in

If I put the electronic scales under the front and rear wheels separately, how can I calculate the total weight of the bike ?

Just weigh both ends sepatately then add the total. You can also divide each end into the total as a percentage to get the weight distribution, in my case:
front 102.6 ÷ 219% = 46.85%
rear 116.4 ÷ 219% = 53.15%
It,s best to have the bike on the same level as the scales if you don,t have a hoist scale like worntorn.
At home I have a footpath with a step that is the same height as my electronic scales but the work scales are just about level with the floor and will take the complete bike to confirm the total weight.
Two of us lightly supported the bike each side vertically for accurate readouts.

you are right more like 35 - 50lb between the often quoted 415-430 lb range, mainly e start, rear disc, cush drive, and footpeg/ rear master cylinder assemblies possibly.
You,ve done well to get down to 438lbs with a near stock Mk3, mine is 32lbs lighter than originally but alot of unseen/alloy bits substituted to get that.

Could lose possibly another 17lb with alloy barrels, fork yokes, mudguards and custom seat but alot of cost and I like the bike as it is in function and looks.
Just lost 4.5kg to get back to my normal 89kg, much cheaper.

I,m also around 130 starts into a 2500+ mile tour using an $18 Chinese sprag, will update on your post about these when I get back to the UK.

Thanks for that. I will try to find something the same thickness as the scales and put it under the opposite end wheel as I use the scales. I'm surprised that your bike weighs more in the rear than in the front. When I built the Seeley 850, I tried to keep the weight forward as much as possible. When I had my Triton, moving the motor forward an inch until the mounts touched, made a significant improvement to the handling. It felt much more positive.

Are you considering possible weight savings in relation to the rider, 14-28 pounds in most cases!

;)

Now you've got me hooked, Glen. I bought a crane scale like yours, with 600 lb. max, and hung it from the rafters for my first measurement. My 2015 961 Sport with all fluids, full tank of gas, Shorai battery, no cats, SBN silencers, and a fair number of steel fasteners replaced with titanium, weighs in at 507 lbs. That's really close to the 501 lb kerb weight that Norton claims in the service manual. Doesn't feel that heavy when riding, and most of the mass is fairly low, so it's not even too bad to push around. I'm working on reducing the weight, but realistically, I don't expect to get much under 500 lbs, unless I go for the carbon fibre wheels, which drop 15 or 16 lbs, plus a pound or two for getting rid of the tubes. I'm thinking about them, but that's a lot of money for just 18 lbs or so.

I'll weigh the MK3 and the race bike as soon as I get a chance, and some sturdier straps. The setup I used today with tie downs and rope was a little iffy.

Good that Norton has come clean on the 961 weight.
For ages they claimed 415 dry. Most magazine testers just accepted and listed that number.
I think it was Cycle who finally put one on the scales and found the true weight, around 520 wet, iirc.
That about lines up with your result for a 961 with some weight removed.

For the scale I've been using some soft loops something like these

I bought them years ago to use when tying down bikes for transport. Sometimes the tie down hooks mark paint, the soft loops prevent that.

Thanks, Glen. I have a bunch of those soft ties too, and used a couple of them for the weighing. But I'm hoping to find some longer ones so I don't have to string them together so much.

This weighing thing can be addictive. This is my grandson's MK3 on the scale. Wet weight with full tank was 458 lbs.

Next up was my wideline featherbed landspeed racer, at 295 lbs. almost dry. That's with oil in the gearbox but no engine oil or gas.

And last, just for fun, is my 660 Rotax powered MZ at 349 lbs. full wet.

I think that's it for a while. Until I finish the other MK3, I don't really have anything else interesting enough to weigh.

Ken,

I noticed that your Grandson's MK3 has a custom left side fork slider with a Lockheed caliper.
Are these left side sliders available from Norvil?
Is there a MK3 kit available - slider/rotor/caliper?

That's a Production Racer slider that was left over from my racing days. They are still available from Andover Norton, although currently out of stock. They also offer the PR disk assembly, front hub, and other bits. I don't know of anyone offering it as part of a kit for the MK3. The original PR disk has a 6 bolt carrier, so to fit it to this bike with a stock Commando front wheel, we bought a new center from Norvil with the stock Commando 5 bolt hole pattern.

Just weighted my Dominator SS.

110kg front and rear = 220kg or 485lb. Scales were 20mm high, so there might be a negligible difference due to the slight difference in level. Plus I was holding the bike upright.

Did it again with 20mm boards to keep it level and used the side stand.
Front 23.7kg
Rear 41.9kg
Side stand 150.3kg
Total of 215.9kg or 475.9lb

Full tank of fuel, oil etc.

Call it 217kg or 480lb and you wouldn’t be far wrong. About right compared to the Commando I’d have thought.

Now you've done it. Went and ordered a hanging scale. Just have to know what the old boat anchors in my garage weigh.
