CNW E-Start

I pulled the trigger and clicked the buy button for a cNw electric start yesterday. I'll probably put up a build log on the forum once work begins.

Can anyone offer advice or caveats? What can I expect?

I will be watching this closely, mine arrived recently and I hope to get to it soon.

Install a new crank seal while everything is opened up.
Use a sealant for the bolts that fasten the inner primary to the crank case.
Don't over tighten the drive belt.
Expect a blue mess after running the belt as it sloughs off it's coating. Normal.
Think about whether you want to change the transmission drive spocket while
it is opened up. I went back in later to go from a 20 to a 21 tooth sprocket
I am glad I did. I'm a sucker for long legs.
I didn't like the clunky looking starter button/kill switch supplied with the kit
and opted to use the existing unused button on the OEM switch. Easy.
Choose your EI well. This and the Alton kit don't take kindly to kick backs. I
installed a TriSpark.
Expect the best tech support available anywhere from Matt.
Be amazed at instantaneous starting by the press of a button.
 
Get a very good battery with at least 270 cranking amps
My Estart battery finally failed after 6 years a month ago, replaced at Batteries Plus

- keep a good battery tender with digital percent charged readout
 
if it does not come with a dual transmission adjuster than order one as belt tracking is critical.

Not saying it isn't a good idea, but I've had no belt misalignment issues with my
cNw belt system after 3000 miles.
 
CNW E-Start is a game changer. I lost some strength in my right leg so I couldn't kick it over anymore. This saved my riding.
Worth every penny.
 
I’m in the middle of installing a CNW E start. I also upgraded the alternator and opted for the hydraulic clutch plus a few other CNW items that I just HAD to have. I don’t live too far from Matt’s place so I drove over to his place to pick up my kit. Too much eye candy in his shop.
The install is pretty straight forward. I had to call Matt a couple of times just to clarify a couple of procedures but otherwise no issues. I still have to power it up but I’ve decided to rewire the bike so I’m a week or so away from finishing.
 
I really like the CNW estart but I hate to get rid of my ham can air cleaner. I whish they would make a smaller one that looks like a ham can to kind of keep the original look. I do not want just an KN hanging off the carbs.

I hear ya. That's my biggest down side too. But I figure having e-start will allow me to ride it again instead of just looking at how pretty it is.

I recall seeing a part made by a company in Western Australia that was a smaller ham can to accommodate the CNW starter, but lost the link. Maybe someone here remembers?
 
@cyclegeezer I think it was Murray from Cycle Craft Engineering based out of Perth

He doesn’t have a shop or webstore, I think he made a one-off for a project he was doing.
 
I've installed a couple of these, and they are a quality product. It would be nice (and easy to do) if CNW included photos in the instructions that made it clear how things fit together.
 
I spoke with Matt about this almost a year ago and he expressed interest in making them. But I think he has a lot on his plate as it is.
