Ashman's CNW starter

Hi John, I am not a fan of the Mighty Garage, if fact I never been a fan, I watched a few shows and after a while I watch something else, I do my own work and no need to watch it, there are also a lot of Ytube about the CWN install around I will just follow the instructions and do what I do best when working on my Norton.

I ran a RGM belt drive kit on my Norton for over 3 years and already have double adjusters mounted on each side of my plates and after sometime my belt was trying to run off, never blew a belt but it was wearing the outside of the belt down and ended up shattering the keeper plate on the front pully no matter how much adjustments done, I ended up going back to a triplex chain drive, I had 3 years of no problems with the belt drive then it went all wrong with trying to run off so maybe the GB and crank started to go out of parallel, but I will be making sure everything is right with this set up.

To be honest I found no difference running a belt drive to a chain drive on my Norton, some say the belts run smoother but didn't feel any difference to me, the chain drive has a bit more give than a belt set up, the stock clutch plates did bite a bit quicker with running a dry primary, I had a spare inner case that I mod for air to run through my primary.

I have 2 full belt drive kits the one I ran on my Norton was all steel and I brought a alloy belt drive kit for my 1960 Manxman cafe racer build which I still have but sold the Manxman last year in boxes, just didn't have the time to finish the project, I had the parts to run it with a Commando clutch all from RGM, I put the money into the start of my train layout and new hobby.

As I say I won't have any problems installing the CWN ES kit as my bike might look its age but when it comes to the working of it, I am very fussy in how things are set up and one of the reasons my Norton has been so reliable when I built it back in the 80s, I didn't build it for a show pony or a polish queen, its built for riding, handling and terrorising the ranges it was built for and slower bikes never know I am behind them till I am pasting them usually in the corners and Rob, Mt Mee was where I done most of my terrorising on my Norton in my younger days or up in the Malaney ranges, I done a lot of high speeds on those roads, can't do that there now too many cops and speed cameras these days.

All good. Sounds like you know what your after.

My belt issues were more about ending up in the gravel run off at Pukekohe and putting gravel through it. Kind of chews them up.

All the best with the instal.

Cheers John

Received the invoice for duty fees from Home Affairs today, and just paid the duty fees from my bank account, so package will be handed to Aus Post for delivery once they receive payment so should get it in the next few days, 10% GST +Home affairs fees, the taxman has got their cut, but all good once I worked out the paper work and now I know how and where to find the paper work so next time be easier now I have a Custom Client ID paid by BPay from my account.

I decided to wait till after my 50 year celebration to install the ES kit as I want to fire the Norton up on the day and hopefully will have my new leg and be standing on 2 legs/feet on the day, but I can set the original oil tank up and do a few other mods on the bike before the big day, I brought my Norton new with kick start so think it be right to fire it up on the kicker on the day.

50 years, never thought I own my bike that long and what a joinery I had with my Norton in that 50 years, had some great times together, a few bad times as well, a lot of drunken times and stoned times in my younger days, a few runs from the cops, a few slides down the road from pushing it past its limits, a few injuries from them slides down the road, but nothing real serous lucky, a few license suspensions from points and one DUI (3 x for 3 months at a time) but the DUI was in a car and was just on the limit.

Been to a lot of parties and biker do's on the Norton from over night do's to full weekends and longer do's and most of my biker mates was with me from the beginning to now, old mates stick together through thick and thin, have lost a few on the way and some no longer into the bikes, but we all stuck together, I could write a book but somethings should just stay with the mates involved lol.

I think lots of us could write that book but the statute of limitations might not have passed for some of us yet
The good thing about what we got up too is we always seemed to get away with it, one local cop in my younger days tried his heart out to catch me but always got away from him, but he knew it was me, by the way he was the officer who read the breather test machine when done for DUI and when I tried to look at the reading I was told to sit down or I be forced to sit down with 3 other officers in the room, so he did get his revenge on me, but because the reading was low was only a light fine and 3 month suspension, better than being forced to sit down, all part of growing up and not be a smart arse when cops are involved.

Just curious, how much were the fees?
10% GST was $217 + $90 for Home Affairs fees, a small price for all your hard work Paul and happy to put in for everyone's efforts, but lucky the first box got through without being pulled up as it would have cost more, not sure why it got through the taxman hands.

Just want to thank everyone again, I am so over whelmed from everyone's efforts to keep a legless person on the road with his old Norton, it's a rider and be sad to see it just sitting in the shed, but I won't be legless for long, a few more months for rehab and I be walking and riding sooner than later, Debra is now walking on her injured right leg, slowly but surely without crutches or moon boot, she is doing well, I always told her she be walking before me, but she is wearing a few battle scares, but heeling up great.

Next month is the start of winter here and the best time riding days, cooler days and the Norton runs the best when cooler, but it be spring by the time I be back on the road, fingers crossed that is, but then the way I am going in rehab, they say 2 or 3 months learning to walk but I am so keen it might be sooner, you never know.

Wow, I'd have covered those charges, but if it came from insurance payouts, that's only fair. Realistically, you might've been able to get them to buy the kit! (no worries)

Yeah, most likely you can ride before you can walk hee hee...

I am not going to rush the install of the kit as have a few other things to do on the Norton, thinking of lifting the motor/GB, primary and engine mounts out of the frame can do it all in one lift as my frame could do with a new paint job, but then maybe not lol, better to just get back on the bike and ride it as it be over 6 months by the time I am ready from the accident, a long time for me without riding.

Someone asked me the other day how I go getting back on the bike again and they were surprised in my reply " I can't wait to get back on the bike, just a flesh wound" I said, of course they were a non rider, should have seen the expression on their face when I said it, same with the doctors and nurses when I said it won't stop me riding motorcycles, it's my life and my Norton has always been part of my life, normal people just don't understand.

Sorry to hear that John
He was a good bloke. Owned and raced several Commandos and was there at the beginning of BEARS in NZ with all the Christchurch boys including John Britten. Just last Nov he was racing his Manx and BSA Goldstar at the Levels track. Motorcycle mechanic and engineer all his life in NZ, OZ and the USA. Helped with the 7R AJS at the Manx Classic 2 years ago. Survived by his wife of 40 plus years and at least 2 children. Very friendly gentleman who never lost his cool. Cancer and in 3 months that was it. 😢
