Mikuni Questions

I am also of the mind that it is the ‘unkind’ manifold that’s the bottle neck on a Cdo. On a Triumph it is less of an issue. So the lost BHP will be more on a Cdo.

Of course the power does not ‘stop’ at 5k. But it certainly stops increasing, making any further revs just pointless.

It will be a bigger issue for anyone wanting to ‘hop up’ their Cdo with cams or porting etc as, basically, it won’t yield the potential results and the ‘bottleneck’ remains unchanged.

I had a 36mm Mik on a stock 850 and it definitely ran out of steam at around 5k.

It was nice below 5k, but I have also ridden a friends stock Cdo, and that was just as nice, complete with its new Amals.

I'm pissed off ! Just got my second speeding ticket today, a day after getting the last. And another one a few weeks ago. That's not what Mikuni 34s are supposed to be about. Do you twin Anal boys really think that an extra couple of horsepower makes your Commando the duck's guts? Really? You sound like a pack of whining Jap bike riders. Oh, I've only got 190 horsepower. I need more! My Commando had it's VM34 on it when I bought it 12 years and 65,000 miles ago. It starts well, with a half hearted kick, idles beautifully and doesn't lack power anywhere I care about. I get 65 mpg, which isn't about being frugal with my cash, but about fuel range, which is about 160 miles from my Roadster tank. As I've said before, this is about the life of three sets of Anals with a rebuild each! Apart from jetting changes, I've spent less time on my Mikuni than some of you blokes spend on yapping about the problems with your Anals.

Yeah, yeah. But the new Premiers have fixed that. After 50 years, so they effing well should have! Recently, somebody said that Anals are really good, if you clean out the pilots every month or so. And he was serious! Unlike a lot of keyboard Command heroes, I actually ride my Commando most days, year round in all weather, in all, an average of 1000 miles a month. I really enjoy the power available with my Mikuni and the fuel range it gives me.

A quite famous motorcycling identity was heard at Philip Island a few years ago saying " One brake horsepower in the mid-range is worth three at the top end". And, he was talking race bikes. Even more so on a road bike. I'll take the one in the mid-range thanks.

What speed were you doing?
I can't think of any country in the world where you wouldn't be able to break a speed limit with a commando equipped with a single VM 34?

153 mph. I was trying yo get one up on Hobot.
Joking aside how fast were you going?
I'd heard it'd got bad for over policing on the roads since I was last out in Oz, which was in the 1980s

Luckily, I usually scrape in just under 10kmh over which means no demerit points and a hundred dollar fine, but, I'm racking them up in short order. The downside of a very torquey motor and 22 tooth gearing is that you assume that you're not going that quickly.

As for the method they use, Multanova units hidden in innocuous vehicles on the side of the road. You see police on the roads here VERY rarely.

Same in the Uk you don't see many police cars but plenty of cameras though,
Have you thought about fitting a 17mm mikuni ?

If you don’t want the fine- don’t do the crime!:(

You do know that this is a thread about Norton performance? So maybe you should stick that worthless advice somewhere it will be safe from prying eyes. If I want advice on speeding, I'll ask my wife.

Those School Zones are tricky. Usually one ticket is enough to restart the learning process tho!

That may have something to do with the 65mpg figure, also.
Funny enough I once had a mk2a that I fitted a modified atlas inlet manifold with a single 32mm concentric with a pancake air filter fitted I remember it did exactly 65mpg
It was my only transport at the time and the mpg was much needed
But a mortgage/kids/divorce took that one from me but my 750 built from parts is a far better bike so I'm happy

I didn't design my bike around looking cool for my one in four Sundays run down to the coffee shop to discuss what colour I'm going to paint the frame? Unlike many, my bike was built to ride, not to drill up and down roads looking at my reflection in shop windows. My days of being a boy racer are done too, so a meaty low end and mid rnge fit my needs well. I ride it a lot and practical mods have been made to the point where, I believe, it is the finest all round Commando to ride and own that exists. In my not so humble opinion. I don't fuss over details and it only looks as good as it does because my rebuild was hijacked and, even though I paid for the job, I had to fight for every last little mod I wanted. And my budget was nearly doubled. It was tough to come up with the money and I begrudge the time spent cleaning and polishing. The Mikuni provides reliability, which is paramount in my world as I travel to quite remote parts of the country. I cant see the Mikuni wearing out anytime soon or having my motor sucking in any spare bits of it. It can be quite a distance between fuel stops so either a big tank or good economy is quite important if you want to do any sort of distance.

Side note- why do we still do fuel economy in Imperial gallons? Nothing has been sold in Imperial gallons anywhere in the world for decades, but we still like to compute fuel economy using Imperial gallons.

I guess it gives a feel good number, like Dynojet HP.

I say let's bring back the British Ale Gallon, it's even bigger and there could be Ale involved!

And I'm just waiting to fit a pair of the new 100/90 x 4852.6 Avons.

With 21 T countershaft sprocket fitted @ 5000 rpm my speedo say 90 mph .... book say @ 6000-102mph and @6500-110 mph .... could anyone tell me if speedo is anyway near accurate .... Single Mikuni powered and rare for me to see much more than the 5 Grand .... seems fast enough for roads we have here ....
