Mikuni Questions

I'm pissed off ! Just got my second speeding ticket today, a day after getting the last. And another one a few weeks ago. That's not what Mikuni 34s are supposed to be about. Do you twin Anal boys really think that an extra couple of horsepower makes your Commando the duck's guts? Really? You sound like a pack of whining Jap bike riders. Oh, I've only got 190 horsepower. I need more! My Commando had it's VM34 on it when I bought it 12 years and 65,000 miles ago. It starts well, with a half hearted kick, idles beautifully and doesn't lack power anywhere I care about. I get 65 mpg, which isn't about being frugal with my cash, but about fuel range, which is about 160 miles from my Roadster tank. As I've said before, this is about the life of three sets of Anals with a rebuild each! Apart from jetting changes, I've spent less time on my Mikuni than some of you blokes spend on yapping about the problems with your Anals.

Yeah, yeah. But the new Premiers have fixed that. After 50 years, so they effing well should have! Recently, somebody said that Anals are really good, if you clean out the pilots every month or so. And he was serious! Unlike a lot of keyboard Command heroes, I actually ride my Commando most days, year round in all weather, in all, an average of 1000 miles a month. I really enjoy the power available with my Mikuni and the fuel range it gives me.

A quite famous motorcycling identity was heard at Philip Island a few years ago saying " One brake horsepower in the mid-range is worth three at the top end". And, he was talking race bikes. Even more so on a road bike. I'll take the one in the mid-range thanks.

wasn't sure what to make of the 2 vs 1, which brand or which way to go with ..carb talk, but have no doubt now about the viability of running a 1 carb mik, particularly for street use

This Mikuni thread is sounding more like an oil thread... with more passion, even.

I have a Norton daily driver that I use year round, rain, snow, sleet, doesn't matter. I got Nokian to special make me a set of Hakkapeliitta R10s, for sever winter road work and Michelin to run me a set of the same design as used on the Bugatti Veyron for high speed summer work, they grip amazingly well on gravel too. I wash the bike with sea water because it's more available and quite "green", I do live in a highly politically correct state after all, and after the 5th wash the entire motorcycle has turned a very cool flat, almost chalky, white; saved me shit load of dough on a fancy paint job, which is pure BS bling.

And yes, I use a single carb, but the sucker is screwed to a 2.9 liter, positive displacement Wilpple supercharger, good for almost a 30 pound, absolute boost at 8000 RPM, Drouin had the right idea, just didn't take it far enough. To keep my nuts from being blown off I had the wizards at NCR in Italy make me a set of barrels and head out of pure unobtanium with a water jacket. I run .002 skirt clearance and a 10:0 to 1 CR and a 120% balance factor. A friend of mine down at the municipal garage welded me up some cams (DOHC) from a 427 Ford side oiler. Valve springs and desmodromic valve systems are dark ages, my Commando is fitted with pneumatic valve return, I use about one 20 liter tank of 3000 PSI nitrogen every other tank up, which I fill with fuel that Exxon makes me rated at 150 R+M/2.

Speeding tickets? I paper my walls with them along with pictures of my drivers license, which I won't live long enough to ever see again. But whose counting? With the kind of money I spent on this one-off Norton, I own all the cops too; they stopped bothering me when they realized that I had no intention of slowing down. When I'm blasting done the back roads at slightly sub-sonic speeds the cops egg me on with a green flag, the speeds are so high that the cop radar yields an error message...They can't wait for me to start racing with St Peter...

This wonder of nuts and bolts gets 75 MPG when I keep the boost under 25 pounds. I did a similar set of mods to my wife's Ford Escape, you should see her trying to keep up, which she can do when there is more than 6" of snow on the roads. I did give the engineers a bit of grief at Nokian about this, but haven't heard back.

There's a complete single 34 mikuni VM and manifold on eBay UK ,
I thought there would be one along soon!
So if you want to make your commando run sweet but slow it's only £30 at the moment, cheers
Well the carb on eBay finished and was marked unsold , maybe some one made an offer ? Or maybe swapped a pair of worn out amals for it , although I did hear a rumour that burlens were buying them up as base metal for their premier's !!!

You do know that this is a thread about Norton performance? So maybe you should stick that worthless advice somewhere it will be safe from prying eyes. If I want advice on speeding, I'll ask my wife.

Well, you don’t know me and I can tell you I have had my share of speeding tickets, only I didn’t bitch about it at the time, I got wise and did all my high speeds of the public highway must have saved myself a fortune in getting speeding tickets, not to mention keeping my licence safe.:)

I know exactly what Dullauto means re great power and speed on a single carb bike.

I was sure I had a ticket coming when out on Super Rocket last week.
Had er wound out in third when I saw the blue flashing lights in the mirror.
Said screw it, dropped it into fourth and kept it WOT. Sadly they all came by, heavily laden fire truck had some trouble getting me , I gave him a good run.
It turned out they were headed for a car fire up the road.

One day I'll get a speeding ticket on that bike, I just know I will.

Glen

The stock Amal concentrics were toast after about 15,000 miles. After wearing out the second set I put a set of Amal MKIIs on and they worked really well except the choke plungers had to be replaced about every 10,000 miles. They lasted 50,000 miles until they started running rich no matter what I did to them. I guess I work them out. I went with a single Mikuni and haven’t had any carb issues since.
