WOW!!! NOS bare RH4 head casting with Drawings

Oh you proprietary pirates! Just give me a Dremel tool and some files! Why if I cut down on the time I spend on this forum I can probably have it done in 5 or 6 years! And it might even fit!

Having seen the FullAuto head as a fresh raw casting, (the maker is a client of ours) I can say the advertised RH4 head in comparison is utterly crude and possibly a reject. The pattern and casting process on the FullAuto produces a fine clean accurate finish, and cleverly allows both 750 and 850 bolt patterns. From the number of old original heads I have seen and what is availble new today, there is no real comparison in quality that modern manufacturing technology produces.

If he values his reputation, he will NEVER sell a raw head casting.

Err, care to explain? :?: Why should selling raw castings (I'm not talking about rejected stuff which the ebay head might well be) to tuners who like to play with their own ideas be detrimental to his reputation? I don't see the point.

OK, here goes. I own my own business. I happen to manufacture upholstered headboards, and I believe I value my reputation as much as Fullauto. I have been asked many times by other upholstery shops to just make my frames. I would then have no control over the quality of the upholstery. Most of us who own small businesses live and die on our reputation. I am not about to have someone else in control of my products. If they want to make headboards, or motorcycle heads, let them build and stand behind their product, just as I do. Some will be great, maybe better than me, some will be ok, many will probably be turkeys leaning leaning against a fence.

Now it's true that Fullauto only would be making the casting, but many of these would, sooner or later, be entering the marketplace. His castings are very easy to identify. Sooner or later there will be trouble. I want full control of my product and while I would never try to speak for him, I would, however, be surprised if, despite his statements, he would realy sell a raw casting, at least to someone he did not know and trust. If he were to ask my advise, and I am sure he doesn’t need it, I would advise against sale of raw product without material change and different labeling

Edit.... Thinking about it. I hope Fullauto has patented his head (ok, you know what I mean), and copyrighted it's image. He has a superior product and he should protect it.

I don't quite see it that way. I'm quite happy to see raw castings go to people who are prepared to put the work in to finish them to their own idea of Norton head Nirvana. As I've already stated, there is an awful lot of machining in them, even with CNC centres. No warranty implied or stated of course but if you think you can do it, be my guest.

Regarding patents or copywriting, I don't think you can patent something which has already been in production since 1948 or so. I own the tooling, the design of the tooling and the CNC programs which machine the heads to their final spec. That's MY heads, not Norton original heads and that's enough for me. If anyone wants to replicate the process and make heads to the same or similar quality then that's fine, it will take us both a long time to get our money back, let alone make a profit. If anyone wants to replicate the process and have heads made in China or Mongolia or anywhere else for that matter, sell them cheap and deal with the quality issues then that's fine as well. Good luck.

If you want to buy a raw casting from me, turn it into a four valve side valve with a pre combustion chamber, go for it. Just don't blame me for what you finish up with.

Good enough for me. Fullauto. What you are doing is a gift to generations of Norton owners. Even I can purchase stock parts and probably even learn to make odd pieces for my bike. However, if we are to have Nortons on the road instead of in museums and barns, it will take people like you who are willing to put copious amounts of their intellect, labor, and capital in to the brand.

Thanks

I'd think any special craftsman altering FullAuto head blanks would sign his work so no confusion of who did what inside.

+1 -- Diablouph wrote "However, if we are to have Nortons on the road instead of in museums and barns, it will take people like you who are willing to put copious amounts of their intellect, labor, and capital in to the brand." while i can't afford one right now, I do have a project bike in the back of the garage that will one day be sporting a Fullauto head. Wow, sounds like Basil Rathbone at the end of one of his Sherlock Holmes movies but I have to agree. This will extend the practical useable life of the Unapproachable Norton twin and open up avenues for some neat new builds.

Thanks.

I hope you are right Hobot. But, remember, turkeys can't write (no opposable thumbs).

Odd, I'm usually mistaken for Paul Newman.

Thanks for the kind words. Don't know about the intellect and the labour. If you don't know how to do stuff, employ people who do! That's what I did. The copious amounts of capital bit is correct though. Hehe.

Very few of us will ever do anything that is known or remembered by others. Fullauto is now know by many Norton enthusiasts and will long be remembered by many current and future Norton owners.

Now Nigel Bain; my eyes started to water a bit. :)

Surprise, surprise, no one has bid on it yet.

If we didn't have Fullauto for a source, someone might have to.
