WOW!!! NOS bare RH4 head casting with Drawings

I like that the seller thinks the buyer is likely to take the head and drawing to a machine shop and Voila! a stock Commando head for about 1500 GBP?

The WOW WOW guy; reminds me of the Shamoo Infomercial guy.

Apparently the same fellow trying to sell a partially machined head. For the same reasons stated in the "other" thread I would not touch this. Why was it not finished? Was it smuggled out of the foundry back in the day in someone's lunch bucket thinking it would be priceless. Just as likely it was a reject that did not make it back to the melt pot.

It may have value (with the prints) as an oddity with some history. I would purchase it with someone else's money just out of morbid curiosity.

Puts the Fullauto head in perspective.

Yes, would be very interesting to know what Fullauto would quote for a raw casting. I mean Jim is not the only guy who likes to play around ....

Well somenody will probably buy it, I recently saw a side cover sell for 250 bucks on E-bay!!

In the windmills of my mind I seem to recall some info about porous Norton head castings that never made it to the machining process. Could this be one? Anyway, if you were going to start with a new head, the Fullauto route would be the way to go. Anyone who buys this eBay one probably isn't aware there are new, better heads available.

I figure the head would be worthless, I would like to have a copy of the document however. Jim

I'd of thought the value in it would be to experiment with porting for flow bench use only.

More practical ways.

Silicone cast to a plaster cast and then whittle and fill away.

I'll get some pictures in a couple of weeks when I get back.

I have lots of junk cracked RH4 heads to experiment with. In fact this afternoon I went wild with a carbide burr to try something new. Made lots of metal chips but no improvement.

Well never mind then and best of luck to ebay'r with his chunk of papered junk.

If he values his reputation, he will NEVER sell a raw head casting.

Err, care to explain? :?: Why should selling raw castings (I'm not talking about rejected stuff which the ebay head might well be) to tuners who like to play with their own ideas be detrimental to his reputation? I don't see the point.

Hell, I'll sell you as many raw castings as you want for about that price. Mine, however are much better quality than that. Also, however, I am quite aware just how many hours of CNC machining are required to complete the puzzle. My new batch will be costing me more due to, and I quote,

"We regret due to the complexity of the casting we our forced to pass on the price increase above due to cost validation established through previous production runs. This increase has only been partially offset by process efficiency gains."

Also, however, I shall be absorbing the cost this time as I just do not want to bump the price again at this stage.

If you want a raw casting, please contact me as I need some lead time to organise. I can also have them cast with very small ports so that your imagination can run wild. There is , of course, no warranty with a raw casting and the CNC programs used to machine the heads are not on the table. They cost me too much money. Another thing, the factory blueprints..........are wrong. Machine to the specs of an actual head, not the drawings, or it won't fit.

Good luck.

Andover Norton sold one of the British dealers head castings years ago (that was before I had any say in it) and I hear he still whines about how much it cost him to have them machined.

Not something to undertake for the amateur, and certainly not worth it for one head only. I bet the Fullauto route is cheaper and very likely ends up with a far better product.

Then again, there is always some dreamer out there who thinks with the casting and the drawings he will end up with a new head for little more than he paid for the casting on e-bay. Good luck to him!
