What is it...? A bike currently on eBay if I'm not mistaken!

You buying another toy?

The eBay ad says it's a '74 850, so would have started life as a MK2 or MK2A.

If the side panels are original, then it would have been a Roadster.

IMHO, most of the 'period' cafe racer parts are nothing to get excited about, to say the least. With the exception of those wheels, they'll ideally benefit from crack testing, but assuming they're OK, they're nice period items I think.

The back brake is not standard, I guess it was converted from drum to this brake set up in order to fit the wheels?

Given the amount of missing standard stuff, and the absence of it being anything 'special' like a JPN, the classified price shown on eBay is high IMHO.

However, '307043' would make it a late Mk1 or a Mk1A (looks like it could be a Mk1A).

Hi ,

I went to see the bike with a view to buy the seller was honest and so was the bike, it started and ran well . But it was alas a flight of fancy as I have more than enough to keep me busy . I thought the bike was a fair price (not the price advertised) and I did want it. Cheers for the input guys , but the riding position would probably have scarred me for life . If anybody is thinking of a purchase, I think it is a good machine that has seen some love in its time , I surmise that to PO could have been ex navy ,submariner related perhaps.

You're really not thinking straight you know... I'll come and take that '68 Bonnie out of yer way, thereby instantly creating physical and emotional spare for that Commando....

What day suits you...?

Did this bike have any sort of cush drive in the rear hub, or didn't you get that far with the questions ? I had my hands on a set of the same wheels years ago but can't remember.

Yes, I did ask the question and he did say he presumed it was in the hub . He also said the first and only owner to ride the bike(second owner a dealer in Kilmarnock) was from the south coast who had moved to Helensbourgh probably something to do with Trident. What do you know of the wheels Sam ?

Cheers for that Nigel, I appreciate your kind offer but unfortunately it is chained to the old T160 and I have misplaced the padlock key. So let the moths out your wallet and splash the cash cos the big day is looming ever sooner!

I bought a set of the same wheels from Norman White , must be 25 years ago for a Mk 3 I had at the time. When they arrived I just didn't like the look of them as the spokes weren't evenly spaced, and the wheels looked strange from certain angles, I can't remember if there was a cush drive or not - memory fade !

those are SMAC wheels , made by eric offenstadt in the seventies
they were available in aluminium and magnesium.
the magnesium variety should be used with caution now , magnesium degrades with age. but these are the aluminium ones
there is no cush drive in the wheels , but a bolt on cush drive was available

i think i saw this bike in the cornwall area in 83
it was very much looked after then and its owner was a member of the noc , also came to terry hobbs shop
if any-one would want more info perhaps contacting nick medlin of the noc could help as nick surely knows the nbike

I took this image from a link dynodave posted on the orange combat post and the tank and seat look very similar if not identical. It is easy to see why you remember the bike but it must have been a real looker thirty odd years ago. I may drop the NOC webmaster a line as he told me he does a fair bit of bike tracking, I think the dealer who bought it first got it about two or three years ago . He also had a proddy race rep at the same time don't know if he got them from the same guy or not.
I think the bike would be interesting to own and with a tank fix would be a lot of fun in short bursts .

Thanks lynxnsu and huub

Sort of looks like Pete Koguts bike. He used to be the NN editor. Not sure he is still playing with bikes or not.

I had a Commando with, I believe the same wheels and what looked like exactly the same rear brake system in the early 80's. I bought it from Dougie Clark, DGA Clark at Friern Barnet.
Cannot remember much about the bike but do recall when I returned to it at a race meeting I found a note saying to check the rear brake.
Sure enough the casting had cracked across.
When I bought it I was told it was a Tony Faola prepared bike. But I have no evidence to prove it.
Unfortunately I have no photos either.

Anyway I suggest you thoroughly check the calliper support casting!

This bike has popped up on the bay for £8500 on a dealer site down south, with the tag of "a great investment" it will be for them as it could have been bought for 5.7k in Feb , good luck to him.
