too old to worry about looking dumb (65).

so, what's 'p-11' mean?

is that a norton model?

thx,
goo

Incidentally, that Wiki entry could be slightly wrong, the P11 was developed when the Company was Norton Matchless, the name and entity Norton Villiers was slightly later...

I would believe the P11 was main reason Norton knew it needed engine isolation. If ya like the Commando spunk imagine it with a lot less lb.

Desert Raceing .

Was a G-50 Matchless off roader o.h.c. 500 single , chrome molly frame machine .alledgedly the o.h.c. was banned ,
so they threw big hairy twin cylinder engines in the chassis theyd built .

Rickman road race chassis was originally for the same engine .
so the big hairy twin fits in there well too .

Actually it was the G-85 frame. It was a dirt bike and had a pushrod 500 single. The OHC G-50 was a road racer.

Did anyone spot that the Wiki P11 entry mentions that the frames came from Manchester ?
Anyone know what that was about ?

Where did AMC Plumstead source their competition welded 531 frames ?
Inhouse, inhouse from Manchester (AMC had little divisions all over the place, remnants of all the factories they'd accumulated) or some outsourcing not mentioned before ?

Dog-T that link to the Norton brochures is great. The Mr. Bean looking guy standing behind the 70 "S" is fantastic. The PO of my bike gave me a September 69 copy of Cycle mag with the "S" on the cover and a road test article inside. Love all that old advertising stuff.

Some neat pics there, thanks for the link David.

Its perhaps worth mentioning that there was an Atlas Scrambler before the P11, and the Nomad before that. Heavy machinery are the words that come to mind, some serious muscle to ride those in anger...

Every get a Commando sideways in the dirt....it's fun. Hobot knows.

Ugh, I had no cycle experience but a few minutes on my brothers Honda 350 when I stumbled on the P!!. As it was too low to lean only way to turn a city 4 lane intersection was to Zarromph into the center, VAromF sideways till twisted 90', then Varroomm on down the road. Dirt and sand were almost as easy with the switch like power to skew rear out but I didn't do no flat tracker like hi speed sideways on it thank you, except on the first ride after a bad coil dryed out suddenly and killed me. Most my sideways stuff happened accidentally on THE Gravel or The Grass so had to get used to handling it or simply get ground to dust.

Next time on nice even grass or sand or dirt, ugh or Gravel, while straight up in 1st get er a throttle blip and let off some to feel it kick out and self correct into slightly new line. Gets addictive and we all know that can end.

The company became Norton-Villiers in 1966, therefore the P11 would certainly have been a Norton-Villiers product.

So how does this fit into it ?

Norton Matchless Division
44 Plumstead Rd
London SE18

And the tank said "Norton", unlike the early Commandos that actually said

Norton
Norton Villiers

on the little round plastic badge.

It doesn't change anything-as far as I'm concerrned. "Norton-Villiers" was soon removed from the Commando's badge.

The P11 was gone by the time the Commando appeared ?
They didn't overlap ?

P11A's/Rangers were built during Commando production.

Does it say Norton Matchless Division or Norton Villiers on their paperwork ?
