Looks like rusty old original parts are now expected to cost x 2 that of new from AN
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Norton-Comman ... 4ac399f35a
There's also been a breakers in Scotland trying to flog Commando POS for loads of money. How do these people sell stuff like this and keep a 100% ebay score? Are the buyers just so pleased to find original parts or maybe they don't sell?

It always amuses me when rocker covers are typically twice the cost of new - plus they need a polish!

Looking at completed listings generally restores the balance a tad, but the fact remains that Commandos no longer come cheap :(
Can't punish the seller if someone's fool enough to pay more than its worth - only if it isn't what it's supposed to be. Eye of the beholder, caveat emptor an' all that

At the stafford show a M2A one owner 31000 miles fetched £9100..it was nice..but not concours. but with Vincents [Comets] commanding £17 k the Nortons are still cheap.

True that but I like to have the option.
Plenty of these come up on eBay in poor condition with asking prices around the $75/$85 mark.
I was somewhat surprised to pay $102.50 for this NOS Pre Unit inner cover this morning, the NOS outer cover went for over $200.
You have to wonder how much new old stock is left in the USA,it can't last forever but have no illusion that the amount (Brit spare parts) that was shipped there is most likely beyond comprehension.
The reality is still,a good deal of these motorcycles were treated with a throw away mentality, they were owned in a lot of cases by bodgers,as number deplete values go up along with decent spare parts.
That in turn created the catch 22 parting out of what might be deemed good motorcycles, supply and demand.

I have seen the auctions for those UK based breakers, all of the parts prices are over the top, perhaps prices are based on the date that day or some form of spinning pointer device.
I watch eBay fairly closely,in the grand scheme of things some parts still do not fetch a lot of money (even though there are cycles)
When I picked up a complete head light for $75 ,MikesVintageParts had a close to mint Commando head light listed at the same time, near plug and play yet it sold with multiple bids for $81 on a worldwide listed auction.
A replica head light body costs around $49.

Definitely both factors must come into play, now why don't I ever think like that

Thats a well known saying! But it can also work against you, i had the £16000 and like a FOOL deceided to NOT buy the Aston DB4 , it stood in a garage un-loved.un-wanted...OK it was 20 years ago....but my money was not SOON parted...that car sold for £160.000 later :!: and now £200,000 :!: :!: I was a fool for not Parting!

Commandos will rise in value, my HRD sold for £6750 in 1984....been offered £25000 ...my MK3 for £5500 bought last year...offered last month £6500 not bad in 12 months!

Everyone on this site knows what is what. Last year I got an unused RH10 head for $400.00 and a MKIIA running for $2500.00, a ready to race short stroke 750 motor for $2500.00 and a late model Drouin (unused) for $2000. All From Ebay. I am happy with what I paid. If your not happy, don't pay. Simple stuff

Those are bargain prices, lucky boy. What I was talking about is a rusty old clutch diapraghm for £80 or $130 AU, 70% more than an $80 new part from AN + shipping. On that basis your head could have been $4000. Ok I'll admit that lower value parts can stand higher markups but still..........
Of course you're right in saying don't pay if you're not happy. I was just amused that people in the trade think old sh*t is more valuable than whats freely available to original drawings new for 40% less.

You should have been at the Garstang Autojumble yesterday
Truly nasty stuff for the most part. I guess it's simply because the good stuff goes on eBay. Haven't bought anything in the last 3 visits, but it's good to get out on the bike and mingle with like-minded folks occasionally

And Nortiboy is off my Xmas card list already!

Picking up a running Commando in Australia for $2500 is a bargain for sure, well done. :D
