Thats good to know. Looks like most are marine gas stations. Only 35 miles to the closest, with 93 octane.

Watched the NASCAR race today. Sponsored by an ethanol manufacturer. Seems to me that pure gasoline is on the way out, and those of us with vintage vehicles are going to have to adapt to keep our hobby and vehicles alive. Ethenol isnt going anywhere. The governments and big businesses have too much invested.

After being transferred to Japan back in '98 i bought a small suzuki 400 4cyl. and i remember getting it running for the first time and heading off base to go and check out Tokyo. Later stopped for gas on the way back and about had a heart attack as it cost me almost 30 bucks to fill up with premium. i just try not to think about it too much when i fill up the family van at 50 to 70 dollars a shot. In actual fact the powers that be are already looking at a replacement for Ethanol, as it seems very clear that its benefits to the environment are questionable, and production costs are quite high.

I've always had a soft spot for Alien automoton's with opinions.

I wrote to the major brands selling fuel inmy neck of the woods (Shell, Esso [now Exxon in the US], Petro Canada and Ultramar) The first response I received is from Shell, they said, the lowest grade of fuel (bronze, octane rating 87) may contain up to 10% ethanol, their middle grade (silver, octane rating 89) may have up to 5% ethanol while their highest octane fuel, V-Power contains NO ethanol. I will post the reply from the others when they give me a reply.

Jean,
Is it required in your area for the ethanol content to be posted on the pump? Here in VA they have to, and everything has ethanol in it. I think in NC there is no law to that effect, so the consumer doesn't know what they are getting. Seems to be a state by state thing at least here in the US.

I know there are no stations selling non-ethanol fuel in my area of Colorado. [although the website pure fuel.com indicates differently]
When I have talked to the station owners they tell me they had to pay some type of surcharge to obtain ethanol free fuel and the suppliers for our area don't even have it available anymore. Jim

Bob,
This will not happen.

They could use the money to maintain the roads we've neglected and maybe build some like the ones in Ludwig's last post,

In the UK we have MPs say that poor roads are safer because they slow down the traffic  Not only that we have "sleeping policemen" engineered humps in the road, you probably have too, hit one of these on your Commando at the speed limit and you're air bourne big style, its not funny I'll tell you.

Our lot are just unaccountable anywhere else half of 'em would be jailed.

Where's my blood pressure pills.

Poor bumpy roads? Thing of the past with the Lansdowne Suspension Kits......well nearly  anyway its about time someone give a "Long term view" of the kit....unless no body as done any great miles...except Gino.

Actually, I never saw any labels on pumps stating there was any ethanol in gas, but I never looked hard. Next time I fill up I will take a good lokk at the pumps, but I am pretty sure there will not be any labels. I will write to as many people as I can to make them aware of the problems with ethanol.

Jean

The station owners and oil companies are well aware boozed gas is not popular so many pumps have tiny labels 1/2" x 3-4" long stating this fuel "may contain up to 10% ethanol" On the major freeways where little chance to go somewhere else its displayed in big signs ya can't miss. Its not a bad fuel to burn, if tuned for it, but lowers mileage and can't be stored long and ugh fiberglass succumbs to it.

Here's what one large warning sign looks like, the small ones are just print text.

At the Shell Oil distributor there is a side trailer that sells race gas in Brentwood on Brentwood Blvd....40 miles from Lodi. It helped the pinging in my combat, but what worked better is pop the head and decarbon everything. Ran fine on pump gas after that.

Hmmm.... one about 3miles from the house. They skydive over there. Bet I could talk to them and buy from the diver guys.
I want to be able to run pump gas. Ill try the booster and see if that works. I could buy race gas localy, I love that Smell! Riminds me of saturday nights in the GTO in the 80's.

I pretty much determined that I bought poor quality gas from an independant station. Still, increased amounts of alcohol in the gas cause leaner running conditions and that could account for pinging as well.
