Country flag
starting to look for a new (roadster) gas tank for my 74 - suggestions? plenty of stuff on fleabay and coming from India, and prices vary. personally, I don't have a warm fuzzy feeling with any of these tanks. emgo seems to be a decent replacement. emailed one fleabay seller - said their tanks were made from proper tooling and were better, and more correct than anything available - UK seller. seller?? when I emailed them on where their tanks were made, all they said was they were not permitted to ID the country of origin - "not permitted" - to me, that was a red flag warning and most likely India.

don't mind paying a little more for a quality product - just need some suggestions, vendors, suppliers, etc.. TIA....

I bought what I believe was an Emgo tank... Ebay vendor but a few years back so can't give details.
Very well made and baffled too, no problems with threads or fitment either..

The emgo tanks are superb - and I see that Old Britts has one in stock!

Here is an Emgo one that we got from Andover here in the UK - certainly very happy with the quality!

new gas tank - source???

There have been some posts claiming clearance issues with Emgo tanks when using non standard head steady- Dave Taylor type ,etc.
All apparently fixable with a little judicious hammer work - before paint of course.

I had to raise the tank by one rubber all around with the CNW head steady. This was needed on both a stock 850 metal tank and an Emgo tank. A brand new
Emgo tank is the way to go.

thanks for the replies. just pulled the trigger on a new emgo fuel/gas tank. current, best price (fleabay) from the Bonneville Shop. seems they have a promotional free shipping going on now - that alone is a considerable savings.

new question - are these emgo tanks sealed from the factory - OR - would you consider sealing a new tank while it's all virgin metal? if so, any recommentations?

No, they are bare metal.

Opinion will be divided on whether you choose to seal it or not (I do seal, but it’s a personal choice)

No sealant for me ever but I would recommend pressure testing the tank prior to painting. I know my painter insists on this and had all kinds of plugs and fittings on hand to accomplish it. It protects him and you in case there's a leak after painting.

I have a set in Red and a set in Black. The red set has never been installed. The Black set is currently on the 850 I have for sale but I don't care if I sell it black or red. The tank and side covers are EMGO. They are better quality than OEM in my opinion (usually can't say that about EMGO). I can get you the bare EMGO tank if that's what you want. PM if interested.

And remember how little air pressure to use. If you use too much pressure you can turn a Roadster tank into an Interstate very quickly. :D:oops:

Do not seal a new tank. Pressure test it and verify integrity before anything else.
Tank sealer is a last ditch effort to save a rusty tank, or save fiberglass resin from alcohol.

got it - been looking into a POR-15 kit - nowhere can I find for "new or old" tanks in the instructions. mostly repair and seal old rusty tanks. I tend to run non-ethanol gas - hopefully rust issues won't rear it ugly head anytime soon.

There are chemical treatments for new steel to quell rust . Solutions that you slosh around in the tank . I would do that before paint.
I have had very good luck with tank sealers in three bikes - one going on 10 years now with no breakdown but others have been dissatisfied
and swear against lining fuel tanks . With a brand new tank it should not be needed.

While I would recommend treating any tank with a rust dissolving treatment before any sort of lining product, I would suggest that POR-15 might not be
the best product on the market. Look at Caswell's, or better yet don't line the tank at all unless absolutely necessary.
