Totally exhausting

I'm finally in the homestretch with my rebuild and now I need to find some pipes. I can't use the big bore exhaust I wanted as they aren't compatible with current CNW rearsets. Any suggestions? I'd like to not spend a grip of cash on them.

If nowt Id make the blankety pipes from pipe bends , and theres old BSA A10 like straight through glass pac stainless resonators in stainless steel thatd pass for mufflers .
Below half throttle . Supose S or SS type pipes are unacceptable ?

These suckers come in a variety of lengths.muggins here gave the shorty stainless ones away a while back . Nice & light & compact . One tosses the crushed end of the ' U ' pipe bends &
pre sizes the joins .Dress & file for perfect alignment accross joints .Start & rear & lower . Align outlet then downpipe /Tack securely . Dont use a tiny bit or skinny rods . Good solid welds
will dress back flush . Or Tig Weld once aligned .

Why won't your big bore work?
Any photos of any interference?
Could they be 'tweaked' to work, maybe by a local fabrication shop?
Hard even to guess when the only info is that they won't work.

As Gory wrote, - any skilled hot-rodder custom header guys in your neck of the woods who could do a one-off set for you? Or cut 'n' shut yours?
I recall being amazed at the skill & speed of a bloke who made me a set of pipes [& they were 2 -stroke,with complex shaped cones, too] for a custom fit, I took the bike in, & he crafted them, putting them where I wanted them to hang. You could maybe do like-wise..

I waited like 6 months for CNW to get the big bore exhaust to work with their rear sets, and couldn't wait any longer. I guess they're going to design new ones to address this, but I'm done waiting. I'm just going to get some from Commando Specialties and hope they aren't crap. If they are, I'll follow your advice JAW, and let somebody make some and use the Cdo Specialty ones as a template.

Wants to be ' Mandrel bent ' , not the old ' tube crusher ' type .indeed , custom Ex shop / Header fabricator outfit should be on the ball .
Might pay to inspect their work first .

& how gas tight the welds are too, eh, Matt?

Has anybody here in the states gotten roadster pipes from Viking recently? If so, how much? Pictures?

I got a set of Roadster pipes for my 850 around three years ago. They are very nice. The tubing is heavier than normal, the welds are finished, and the chrome is excellent. And, believe it or not, they fit. If your rearsets require a different mounting point then you might see if you can send them over to him to use when he makes up the pipes.

unground welds . File Finish may be the way . before plateing . A cunning sod would do it all outof the CORRECT grade of Stainless Steel .

Can you post pictures or pm them to me. Front on and side view pics please. Particularly front view of left and right clearance from the frame down tubes in the same pic would be awesome.
I have a set and they are clearly different clearances between lhs and rhs headers.

Just to be a pest .



Sans sidestand LUG , the pipes up' n' in on the Left . Fouls chaincase Joint , swinging out .
About a 5mm clearance . as in a bit of 5 mm strip along underside of chaincase & position pipe centreline INSIDE gasket/ seal joint of case.Thereabouts .
Same relationship to frame tube , Right. Reversed , and there ya go. perhaps . If thats the purpose you have in mind .Nigh impossible to scrape .
Cant get any closer in than that . S/S lug HAS TO GO .

Top pic , & the ' slightly large ' one are EARLY type , at the head / outlet , so dont confuse eye line there , Centre and previous run directly , unangled flange to pipe .

Bolt Upright 6 bends T150 , had em , every iota of the way . No Question . And the honda boy was hard out .Not the size of the dog in the fight , its the size of the fight IN the dog .

Indeed, I recall contesting A.M.C.C. top eliminator at Meremere, early `80s -yes on my Denco equipped H2- the final came down to me vs a brand new Honda V4 'interçeptor' - latest & greatest being demonstrated by the Honda importer, the M.C. hyped up the final as being between old school horror muscle & new tech smooth,superquick. I beat him, but it was close, only reaction time in it...

What a confusing thread! Commando Specialties offers a big bore exhaust. I have no idea if it is compatible. Are you set on having the big bore pipes?
