[Also look at the hole in the mount where the lever pivots. Mine was worn sloppy and results in lost clutch action as above. If it is not too far gone, you can bore out the hole to 5/16, insert a 5/16 OD x 1/4 ID x 3/16 oil-lite bushing...makes it better than new, and if wears again, just insert a new bushing.

PS: Even with lever in like new condition, the Atlas clutch is still going to be "heavy".[/quote]

Even with a “better than new” condition, the Atlas clutch should not be heavy, unless someone has fitted heavier than standard clutch springs in there.
In additional to the lever & cable, your bike has been off the road a long time and the clutch itself will require some TLC, the plates will be stuck together through non-use, so I would strip it down and check for worn plate tab ears, also worn clutch basket slots where the plates fit.
Also check clutch push rod hasn’t acquired any rust where it goes through the clutch main shaft.

Going to replace my throttle cables and see where most places say the extra length on inner cable from throttle is about 3 1/2 "....I had some BSA cables that were that size and when I installed it the adjuster wouldn't take out all the play....I measured the one that came off and the free play was about 2 3/4" and had to adjust about a 1/4 inch to get it right...Wondered if anyone else had this problem and what the solution might be?

Lucas lion medallion

Anyone have a part number or source for the alloy rim that fixes the lion medallion on the headlight bucket?

I think it is called a medallion bead and is part #517066...

Thanks Beach! No picture on the link you gave, but for $4.69 plus post, I'll take a shot in the dark.

Regarding part on link posted by Kernal69:
For the benefit of anyone tempted to buy this item: I bought that part to get the rim to use with my original medallion. That part is an adequate replacement for the original medallion plus rim, BUT IS NOT IDENTICAL, and cannot be used with the original medallion, unless one is willing to modify the original medallion. I am willing to sell the rim plus medallion I bought for 1/2 price should anyone be in need of it.

Has anyone run a Commando clutch on their Atlas, it would be a lighter clutch :?:

Yes, Ashley, I have run a Cdo clutch on my Atlas for about 15K miles.

I was frustrated by blowing the spyders out of my Atlas clutches and the heavy pull. The Cdo clutch was much lighter (two finger pull) for most of those 15K miles, but as the friction plates wore, the stack height lessened, and the pull increased. Then I got into the 3 way juggle to balance pull, drag, and slippage, vs adjusting the stack height with shims. This juggling, plus postings on this Forum of the dire consequences of no drive line cushion on gearboxes finally convinced me to go back to the Atlas clutch. I figured it is easier to replace spyders than gears.

I think the newly made spyders are stronger than the originals, either because they are machined rather than cast, or because of better metallurgy, or is it because I do not race about as I used to.

The Venhill teflon cables help to reduce pull, and using ATF rather than oil, should in theory, allow a tad less spring tension on the Atlas clutch springs. I have installed the Venhill cable, but the Atlas is still scattered about my shop, thus I cannot report further on the clutch pull.

I installed a Venhill clutch cable yesterday and it helped a bit with the clutch pull..I am working with Venhill USA to produce a cable for them to stock for the US bars....Will let you know how it goes...

Re “newly made spyders” What are “spyders” :?:

Check the slots and tabs inside the Atlas clutch these should NOT have a ragged /worn tooth in the inner clutch centre or the outer sprocket.
An Atlas will be the same as a 650ss clutch

I have the clutch centre for the Atlas that will fit the Commando clutch I am going to run a open belt without any Atlas primary cases, I am building my Manxman as a true caferacer, thats the reason I want to use the Commando clutch they work so well, but if I have to get a 850 rear hub for my rear wheel will be no problems, I am still running my orginal clutch plates in my 850 since new have replaced the centre because of wear but plates are still good after 130,000 miles or more and I have never shimmed the stack.

Thanks Beach! Just got that part...it is the proper bezel for the old style medallion. It is part # 517066 available from Klempf's British Parts. New price is $10.00 and worth it. Mitch Klempf was very helpful.
