I ordered a new crankcase (sump) filter plug. The original plug is on the left and the new one is on the right. The new one appears to have a new smaller bolt that I imagine is used for draining without a large socket to remove the whole plug. Is that accurate? Is this a good modification to make?

Is there a US source for those?
Yep. eBay, but I bet others carry it too. Couldn't find it at the Bonneville Shop but I thought they had it.

It's more expensive in the US, not surprisingly.

The only issue I found was that none of my whitworth Dommy spanners fit !!, Obviously Designed for Commando and the Funny threads they use.

I don't have that big plug on my '72, but isn't there a mesh screen that should be cleaned when the sump is drained?

If you have an external spin on oil filter, it should take care of what would get in that sump plug screen.

I would install one of those sump plugs, but my header pipes are in the way. I don't need one, because I don't have wet sump issues, but they look very convenient for getting that last bit of used oil out. I drain my oil at the spin on filter like a lot of people do I would imagine. My add-on external filter is mounted low behind the gearbox. Not a Commando, but still a Norton.

I have 2 of them in use. On mine the magnetic drain plugs had a raised circumference centrally which I filed flat for better sealing, and the mating surfaces (small hexagon to filter body) were not parallel. Filing the mating body surface improved that. Before I hand finished the parts, the bolt would split a fibre washer, causing it to migrate outwards and reduce the torque on the bolt. (with a flat steel washer behind the fibre washer)

The 72 , rear breather crankcase doesn't have the large mesh screen. Only the small drain plug.

I have an unused one that I will part with. After installing Comstock sump plug breather, I do not need it.

PM if interested.

I used an SAE 1-1/2" socket that I happened to have from some other job (not on the Norton, likely). It's a somewhat sloppy fit but good enough, methinks, for the relatively low torque I used on it
