Gauze filter or not in sump plug ?

Hi All,

Interested to know if the Gauze filter in large sump plug of my 850 is needed, When I purchased the bike years ago it never had the gauze in place and I haven't bothered to replace it,I think the spin on filter and regular oil changes will suffice and the flimsy looking circlip holding the gauze in doesn't look that secure !
So should I reinstall the gauze, yeh or nah ?

Cheers Hendo

@cash plus 1, the only Commando without a gauze is the 72/73 750 and these have issues with the oil pump return teeth being mashed up by large debris.

Hence my mod to some 72 cases

Nice work

Judging by the crap caught in my sump plug gauze over the years....you will have had some nasty stuff go in your oil pump!

The flimsy circlip does the job fine, if you make 100% sure it is properly located.
Like SteveA says,I would not hesitate and put that screen in ASAP.Anything that helps these old motors filter out debris is a plus.Just my 2 cents

The stock sump plug also provides a good wee spot to add some extra magnetic filtration with a disc magnet under the gauze in the bottom of the plug ...similar to these Neodymium rare earth magnets that I've used....just a thought...

There are two aspects of this part.

I have one but because it seemed a good idea, but I don't use it because I found that my race fairing doesn't have clearance for it! This won't affect most Commandos, but it may affect some.

You can release the magnetic plug and drain the sump of oil, (handy for a wet sumped engine) but you might then persuade yourself there is no need ever to remove the big plug and the gauze and clean that of non-magnetic particles!

The gauze on mine has had bits of carbon caught in it in the past so, yes it does its job.
Shortly after fitting a magnetic sump drain bolt ( the one rearward of the gauze filter sump plug), I found a segment of a mangled rocker spindle thackery washer attached to it. Never found the rest of that washer after strip down. Could have been in there from factory I guess.

Is it my ageing imagination, or did I once read the recommendation of soldering that wire circlip? Not to excess, of course.......
(Found it!! Dunstall Tuning Notes :-) )

I've never had a circlip move in all the time I've been running Norton twins. These bikes maybe a a bit prehistoric, but the blokes who designed them weren't idiots.

Hi Hendo,
You now have an opportunity to display whether "the affliction" has fully taken hold.
You could spend very little and just fit the gauze, spend a bit more and get the Andover bit above, or go full noise and get the NYC Norton filter with integral reed valve etc.
I have the NYC one, but i have been beyond help for years :)

Hi Iain,

I'll have to wait till after scanning this week to let me know how much of a potential natural increase in lamb numbers we have this yr to pay for the cost of getting that over from the States 😂 ...it's tempting tho !

I stuck one of these in my oil tank along with a magnetic drain plug after fitting the NYC sump breather as the ejected oil via the breather bypasses the oil filter...anal I know :)

Since it shouldn't hurt anything, and it makes you more comfortable then it's a good thing. However, the oil leaving the tank is quite far from the bottom of the tank and anything heavier than oil will settle at the bottom. Personally, putting a loose magnet in the crankcase would worry me but I guess captured in the sump plug is safe.

How many lambs will it cost and how many lambs to cover the cost of shipping? The barter system is sounding good considering the economy today :)

As an exporting national particularly with ag products we are at the wim of our trade partners but at the end of the season ( now ) as meat companies are having a procurement battle the price per kilo is around $7.60 kg- $7.90 kg paid to sheep farmers .We average around 19 kg for our lamb,Less costs obviously ... NZ inflation is around 6.7%, farm inflation is around 16-17 % so there ain't much left over for a NYC sump filter !
Barter is good....anyone ? 😀
