SPROCKET TALK

Thanks Raphi. Instead of going to 19t front maybe go to 47T rear ? Like I did.

NO , Definitely not the same ratio as stock. 18/50 stock = 2.77 to 1 , I am running 18/47 = 2.61 to 1 , so taller than even 19/50 which = 2.63 to 1. BUT it is great for highway cruising around which is what I do most of the time. To get close to stock you need a 17/47 , this will give 2.76 to 1 which is darn close.

Hey guys, old thread that I am sure I re-opened a couple of years back but cannot find; thought I’d give it another punt.

Reading the thread again, I am still interested in dropping the front sprocket down to a 17t and will order one from CNW shortly. Sounds like a really worthwhile performance increase for the way that I ride the Cafe Racer - that being as a weekend short ride (150-200km) machine for ‘spirited‘ riding. Almost never do highways unless taking it in for a service. The extra punch and low speed handling would be a welcome addition and may even be transformational!

Is there anybody on the forum running a 17t front? If so, can you please share your experiences. Any problems butting up against the rev limiter? Any concerns about reliability? Appreciate the feedback.

New tyres, carbon wheels, new shorty exhausts and a 17t front sprocket; its gonna feel like a new bike!

The only one I know of that ran the 17T long term was Raphi . I ran it for a month so am familiar with what it does . If you do a lot of highway driving , this is NOT for you. The bike will run through the gears quickly and has a more aggressive nature about it. You will be carrying a higher rpm based upon your old driving habits. If you crave acceleration and a strong pull , this IS for you. If you drive in the curvy roads most of the time and want more pull out of the turns , this IS for you . The speedo will read 10% higher at least and top end speed is reduced but you will get there quicker.

Thank Tony. All of that sounds great and fits in exactly with the way that I ride my bike. I am reminded of where I generally get to in my thought process on the subject, being with the nagging doubt that the obvious increase in RPM throughout may put additional stress on an already fragile(ish) bike. More revs, more vibration, more strain? Do you think this concern is justified or that I should just stop being a ‘big girly wuss’, fit one and give it a go?

I would give it a go , if it were me.

Thanks guys.

Can’t quite decide at what age I started to become indecisive - but I don’t like it!

I’ll order one tonight and report back. A little more ‘umph’ will be most welcome whilst chasing my riding buddy around the hinterland on his Ducati V4S rocket ship!! That thing’s got more horsepower than the Millennium Falcon!

Long live Norton.

Do it. You can always go back.

Does anyone know if going to a 17T sprocket, can the same chain length be used?
Does the bike have enough adjustment to swap between stock and 17T sprockets while using the same single chain length?

YES , No need to change chain length. In fact my 47T rear didn't need a chain length change. The 17T will be no sweat ! Where are you getting the 17T from CNW ?

I’m not swapping sprockets. Just curious if the stock length chain had enough adjustment.

@TonyA he's likely ordered it last night :D
What I want I can’t get. I’ve asked Talon for a rear sprocket for my naked, which is polished and they said no.
So I either do black or buy black and remove the anodize and polish it.

Where can I get a Talon rear sprocket in the USA?
