What's the experiences with AMC main shafts as per straightness, checking and correcting or when to replace? I found Peel's obvious crocked. I got it back to semi-ok by crude measure and pounding but good enough to discover it was like un-twisting a conical cork screw rather than a bent pipe. I gave up after it got back to a few .000's but believe that was still enough to help wallow out bearing bores and all the bushes faster wear. With the common findings of bad bores I suspect slightly crocked shafts are too. So learn me some on the above please.

Nortons put out a bulletin about checking mainshafts for straightness ??

Just my experience ... I think alot of them are a "little" crooked Steve. That big heavy clutch, and most folks adjusting the primary chain tension too tight ... equals main shaft not perfectly straight no more. That's why an "outrigger" bearing would be great me thinks, but I'm too cheap (and lazy) to buy or put one on. Yet another Norton niggle that goes along with Commando ownership tolerance and joy ... :?

Oh UgH, only takes one over tight primary chain event for candy cane shafts, damhik. I'm not set up to closely check shaft ture-ness so will have machinist check and try to correct if off, if possible. Peel tore up *everything* in her drive train in a series of learning curve balls. One totally un-expected event was setting both primary and drive chain on the extra slack side to creep up on proper full heat adjusting during here initial timid run in, so a few days into easy commuting break in I gave her some throttle on leaving works to get a HARSH kick in my ass, mystery till got home to see the brand new 520 OBSOLETE-O ring STIFF chain had allowed a kink in the links not to relax so chain hopped out of valleys to ran on tips of teeth which suddenly snagged such chain tension it fully compressed shocks to bottom out and transmit the impact. That did a number on the shafts and bearing bores and my mind. I should not be allowed close to Commando's or other machinery.

Not to worry that chain event happened in summer '04 and resolved with another drum with decent teeth left and going though tranny - shafts to bushes again then proper chain tension slack. I don't know if that was the main shaft bend event or the drag strip wheelie tire fold up slam down or some prior hooligans long before me as this Combat was regional famous vender test ride bike that eventually sold to couple other hot rodder I was told. I'll ping Andy for next reel of 530 X ring chain and learned to set tension good enough for no issues.
