Simple question about gas tank mounting

I am mounting a metal Interstate tank. Right now the tank has no pads between tank and frame. When i add the pads (using factory replacement parts), should they be glued to the gas tank or not? Thanks.

If you glue them to the frame, and later change you mind on the style of the bike, or want to paint the frame, you will have to pry them off.

They should be glued to the gas tank, period. Also, make sure ya install the strap that goes to the back mounting of that Interstate tank. Don't want that cracking eh, as it's nicer than mine !

Good to hear your getting it mounted, can ya post some pics ? How did you end up mounting the sidecovers ? That really IS a beautiful set; I used the money as partial payment for a Roadster tank and sidecover set from "Brent" (vintage vendor) in "Fireflake Royal Blue"

Just put the pads in the tunnel of the tank...no glue required. They'll stay in position when you go to set the tank on the frame and they won't move around when the tank is fastened down.

You may or may not want to try this- but in addition to the factory pads I added pieces of large diameter foam pipe insulation around the frame tube. It deadens any rattling sound as well as makes double sure the tank and frame don't rub. I had some rattling noises due to the ultra-smooth Commando engine (!) and this really helped eliminate them. Just set the foam in place, the tank holds it in. Good luck!

IIRC a stack of 5 disc is factory way, but opportunity to fine tune the lay of tank. Don't take too much torque to hold IS tank on even in many crashes I've found. i don't torque to hard to retain some compliance over my rough travels. I put one rubber under the bottom of stud washer/nut for bit more firm compliance.
The real pain are the seat rubbers.

I glued the thin front pad to the tank and zipped the fat rear to the frame. Hybrid!
