I've got 2 left side-covers. One has three pop rivets holding the top bracket on, the other has no bracket, but a broken blob of ? glue and no rivet holes. How were the brackets originally fastened?
Thanks
Doug

Side covers for the 850 MkIA, IIA and MkIII do not have the riveted-on forward bracket, so I suspect that could be the reason why one of your side panels shows no evidence of a bracket having been fitted?

I have one of each. The fiberglass is pop riveted while the metal one is nicely and neatly spot welded.

I have a Fastback or more likely Interpol fibre panel and it had a bracket with a 1/2" or so diameter hole in and seemed to have been fixed with 'Plastic Padding' or similar. No signs of rivet holes.

I have a set of 'glass side covers from a '72 Interstate and the tang is pop riveted just like RennieK's.

79X100,
I have a set of reproduction '71 Fastback covers with tang not attached. I was thinking of trying to embed it with some glass mat and polyester resin. Is that what you mean by "Plastic Padding"?

I was thinking more of the Plastic padding Chemical Metal -

"Plastic Padding is a well-known Swedish brand sold in the Nordic Region, UK and Ireland. It conquered the world with its Chemical Metal product over 50 years ago and now delivers more than 100 products for the automotive aftermarket, industrial market and retail/DIY sector. The range consists of body fillers, adhesives, sealants and rust protection".

As I recall, back in the '70s we only had a choice of two epoxys - Araldite as a glue and Plastic Padding if a big lump was needed.

Ron, I fixed my bracket back in just the way you're suggesting - prepared it well and used a good lump of polyester and mat. I haven't used the cover much as I've tended to run the LR tank with Roadster side panels but the bracket has survived two house moves and falling off the hook on the garage wall so it seems tough. I wouldn't fancy it with a cover full of tools though. I seem to remember grinding my tool compartment out. It certainly doesn't have one now.
