Can anybody tell me if the original was bare metal or painted? Am slowly redoing my 73 850 Commando and trying to be 100% original it is just that I cannot remember! Scary ... I am original owner and did do some work on the top end 30 years ago and sense I may have painted or repainted it light grey - same color as front fender braces. Maybe It was always grey or maybe not?
Thanks
Ron

I have a 74 850 that I restored. The head steady side plates were silver when I got the bike and it was all original. Powdercoated them silver along with the fender stays and the triple tree.

My 74 was untouched Im pretty sure and they are
cadmium plated, silver that is. Not painted.

Yes, my original 69 plates appear to be cad plated, not painted, much like all the nuts and bolts.

My 73 850 has an untouched plates, and they have a little black paint left. What's left is on solid and not from a shaker can.

Definitely cadmium plates as are several other parts such as the muffler mounting plates, front fender bracket (main/center one), redundant magneto hole blanking plate on backside of timing chest, and all hardware fasteners.
