Replacement Fuel shut off valves

What's the word on a good replacement fuel shut off valve for a Commando roadster tank. The last aftermarket ones that were installed seem to be having a problem with today's fuel. There is a black gooey stuff plugging them.

Want to replace them with a proper valve. Any suggestions?

No fiberglass, this is a steel tank machine.
Sorry for not providing that fact. The tank is clean, the stuff is not coming out of the tank, that has already been determined.

Do you have either of these. They are both good and i have use both. Many go for the one on the left BAP I believe but I like the one on the right. They see to flow better and are less confusing to operate. Both are servicable.

I must be missing something? What am I to look at? Or where am I to look?

BAP petcocks are available from Old Britts; mine have been in service for two years using stabilized 10% ethanol gas. They get good reviews from others on the forum. Not too expensive.

Please include your location with your signature; it's hard to recommend a source not knowing where you are.
 
I see what you mean about the one's on the left. Looks like 'On' is flipped up. :roll:
The gooey stuff would be whats left of the rubber seals and whatnot in the petcocks.
I can make no socially acceptable comment about Ethanol. :evil:

The same thing will be happening to the gaskets and seals inside your Carb's as well.
If your still running the original AMAL's, then your in luck. They are still in buisness
and offer alcohol proof rebuild kits.
 
I finaly broke down & installed a set of the BAP's (on the Left) and so far so good. pvisseriii, the ones you show on the right 60-4512 and 4511 look like stock ones. Are they made with seals that last with modern gas? I didn't want to use the BAP's because I like the look of the orig one's but gas flow is a bit important....

Missing the circlip in pic. I bought a set of the BAP from OB, they are only about $35 for a set. Haven't tried them yet, but have heard they work. I would like to know how to repair the originals, I have tried and tried, but they keep dripping (through, not out). The o-rings are replaceable, but the brass taper wears out fast and lets fuel through in the off position.

The holes for the fuel is larger on the original, but I am supposing that the BAP have adequate flow. I took one of the BAP apart and I can't see for the life of me how they don't leak like the originals. It's a rubber seal with a metal backing plate that mates with it.

I'm back to the repo original type after trying the BAPS. The BAPs will still get the "hard to turn" disease. I'm never sure which way the lever should point up or down while I'm riding and it makes me crazy. Was just looking at them and one lever (main) is down and the other (reserve) is up to be "ON". There is only a tiny hole in them for the gasoline to pass through also.

With the stock ones and the BAPs I still have to take apart and grease the rubbers with silicone grease every year or so but they are hanging in there.

There are the really nice ones out there from Jim Noll at British Bike Connection but they are expensive (in my world) and look far from stock.
 
Yeah, I wasn't impressed with those tiny holes in the BAP ones compared to the original, but a lot of people seem to be using them with success. I guess I could check the flow rate.

I've been using BAP petcocks for years with zero issues. No leaks. No black goo from melting seals, as with the OEM-like repop petcocks I briefly tried. No problems with fuel flow. If they get stiff, just flow some fuel through them (use your reserve tap from time to time) and they loosen right up. With clear fuel line, it's no problem at all telling when you have fuel flow!

To each their own, though.

When I first got my BAPs (last year) I was horrified to unscrew the screen and find a tiny plastic tube for the stand pipe. I thought I would never get enough fuel thru it and contemplated taking it out and running both reserve style (for a petcock maybe that is going "commando?). Since I was working on getting carbs tuned and number of other issues I left them both on during trials due to this concern. Afterward I finally started using them independently and tried repeatedly to starve the bike for fuel with no success. They were quite stiff out of the package, but have given me no trouble since then as they loosened up when put into service. The lever pointing up for on seemed weird but I am now used to it.

On a different approach I discovered that it is fairly easy to find adapters to go from BPS to NPT. It seems they get used a lot by the super gaming computer crowd to build cooling for their towers. They are available in stainless steel or nickeled brass. I toyed with the idea of using them to be able to run different valves. I wonder if anybody has gone this direction.

I have some original taps sitting on my bench that I do not plan to use if somebody wants them for a build to original. They were not leaking when I took them out.
