I notice that my original flip top has a "cork" gasket and is very hard. There appears to be an old worn rubber gizmo in the spiral spring between the top of the flip top and the sealing part.

Can I remove the spread center and the washer and then replace the parts with perhaps a new rubber washer and clean the spiral spring and get rid of the worn out rubber thingie between the top and the sealing part. Then, tap the center of the old spread part and install a bolt to hold everything together?

Anyone messed with this?

Is it worth re-chroming or replating, or should I just buy a new one.

Hi Dave,
While I am not quite sure what you are describng, if you need to replace the cork gasket, cork gasket material is available from your typical auto supply store (Autozone). I comes in rolls 1/16 inch thick or 1/8 inch thick and is easy cut with a razor or exacto knife.

Yes it is possible, the rubber seal can be removed from between the two circular metal discs without any need to pull them apart.

Hmm. Looks like the central shaft is large enough to tap a bolt into it from LAB's. Mine has a hard composite material, not cork, but certainly not like rubber and removable. I think I'll take it apart and fix it. I've seen the replacement rubbers for sale and will get a new one.

Thanks,
Dave

Merry Christmas!!!
I replaced my rubber seal. I got it through oldbritts.
No need to take anything apart. The old shot gasket will probably just about
fall out. The new seal can be worked in between the 2 metal washers as stated previously.
Mine was replaced in 5 min. and no leaks. I fill the roadster tank near top full.
Other than turning it 90 degrees it does not splash out even riding hard and on rough roads.
Hope this helped you out 8) 8)

I think that the later caps were dismantlable as per L.A.B.'s. However, I have an NOS Hi Rider tank with what appears to be the original cap and the disc there is retained by a rivetting system. It looks as if the spring-mount post is simply swaged over.

I took a small chisel and knocked back the swaging and pulled the thing apart. The spring is rusty, there was a broken rubber thingie in the spring that I will throw away and I'll clean everything up and either just swage it back on or drill and tap for a machine screw. Same with the flat spring, it was pretty rusty. The top is fairly pitted so I'll clean it up too and plate it. It wouldn't hurt to get a new rubber gasket. The one on there now is very hard, it seems like some sort of plastic.

It's Nitrile not rubber.
Petrol and rubber don't get along with each other. The petrol (fuel) will win the argument every time.

One screw (bolt) holds those two discs together on mine. Why on earth would you not simply take the bolt out, replace the nitrile seal, and bolt 'em back together?

Early ones may not have been bolted or you have one that was modified or aftermarket.

You're probably right, I was referring to a new (but Ceandess) one I bought to replace my original. Well, asked and answered as the saying goes. Thanks - B

I have a new Emgo Roadster steel fuel tank coming, but figured my cap was savable. The parts from the cap off my '74 R90S (on the left) look to be interchangeable with parts from my '72 Norton cap. Actually, the whole cap is interchangeable, just the chrome top is styled a little differently. BMW sells separately the gasket holder with a cork gasket. On the BMW R90S parts link, click on "16-Fuel Supply", then "FUEL TANK MOUNTING PARTS - Diagram #16_02336", then scroll down to #06 p/n 16 11 1 230 603 GASKET. Old Britts sells just the replacement rubber gasket, but my gasket holder looks too rusty to reuse if a replacement is readily available for 20 bucks.

Well, that certainly seems like a no-brainer, unless their shipping to the US is outrageous. Thanks!
Although, Max BMW sends along a packet of M&M's with every parts order....

Alternatively, the Norton parts stockists in the US should have the repair kit with the seal holder, which should save on shipping.

I requested a shipping price from them, but they may be closed today. I did find that RGM carries that kit, but I can't find any source for it in the U.S. Do you know of one?
