rectifier cable?

Hi - i recently stripped my 1969 roadster to find a cable which i just don't understand. it appears that the cable is fused and was fitted across the battery - could someone advise how this cable should be fitted and what is actually does? many thanks

This sounds like the cable from hell, that no-one wants to find in their bike !?
Sorry for the bad news, so close to Xmas.

Perhaps you could describe the color/markings, fittings either end, and how long it is etc.
Or a pic.
Surprising what PO (previous owners) will do to their trusty steeds...
 
Is the cable red? Possible from the zener diode?
Seen a few of them fused together.
 
the cable is about 2ft long and has a fuse on the red terminal - the cable goes in a loop with a connector on one end and pos/neg terminals on the other - but i don't know why anyone would fit it? is it a fitment when you upgrade the rectifier?

Do you mean a wire, with an inline fuse holder, connected to both positive and negative battery terminals? This "connector" you mention, is it a double male spade terminal? Pics available?
 
Only one inline fuse on factory set up. Sounds like someone mistook a red police equipment earth loop for a feed off + battery terminal and melted it on connecting. Its also possible there's enough extra wire length resistance even if connected as proper earth return its resistance to carry whole bike current over heated it. We can only guess so its up to you to find correct wiring diagram and ID color codes and see if still present or not and test flows and polarity. The factory manual shows NU=BrownBlue wire with fuse to the Neg battery terminal for the 750 range.

yes - a wire with an in-line fuse as you say connected to both positive and negative terminals - i have a pic but can't seem to add it to the text - what is the wire for?
 
Not sure why one would fuse it, but the first thing that came to my mind was an added cable to access the battery for charging without taking off a side cover.

There shouldn't be any such wire connected to the battery, as described. Are you sure they aren't two separate wires connected to a double terminal plug (battery charging "pig tail")?

It would seem mistakenly connected improperly.
 
Just been looking at wiring diagrams on Old Brits... The wire you describe... Could it be that someone has removed the capacitor and thought they needed to then bridge it?

Norton mk3 replaced stator and rectifier. Still only getting 11.5 volts to the battery. Connections are all good. Suggestions on what to test?
